Hmmm, depends on who you're getting the directions from.

I'm grew up in NYC where directions are pretty straight forward. I had to go somewhere in the sticks (northern part of NY State), so I'm driving along on a road where there are no lights, no nothing.

I finally stop to ask directions in a General Store - ok, I know I'm taking a chance here.

The guy tells me "drive out, hang a left and go up the road a piece" - ok, now I know I've got some problems here.

I ask him how far down the road is "a piece." He tells me to keep driving 'til I see the corn fields - ok, now I'm pissed. I tell him: "It's November, aren't the corn fields gone, and how am I going to see flat ground where corn was in the dark?!

So, it all depends...

If you dont know how to get there, get directions BEFORE you leave the house.

Dont ask for directions.

Don't need directions. I have an innate sense of direction, I can naviguess in the following cities:
Boston
New York City (well...kinda)
Vegas (downtown and to hoover dam)
Orlando
Ft Lauderdale
West Palm Beach
Miami

Haven't gotten severly lost yet. I once ran a toll booth because we went on a toll road thinking it was an expressway

I plan my way before I leave, carry around a map, and of course ask for directions... WTF is it with men and directions? It's annoying.

I don't usually need to ask (if I'm in a new area I bring my laptop and GPS receiver) but if it came down to it I have no problem there... men evolving... isn't life grand?

I once drove to denmark - from the US

LOL! I'd like to know about your experience of driving on water ;)

In any case, I rarely get lost because I know my way around. But in a foreign land, if I do get lost, asking for directions is quite practical :D
This includes asking for directions in an airport.

I'll let you know if I ever get lost. I always keep a current map with me if I go someplace with which I am unfamiliar. If I were lost, I don't see why I wouldn't ask though.

I grew up in Miami, FL, where if you get lost you're an idiot. The city is a grid. 44th Street and 84th Street are parallel streets 40 blocks away from each other. Very simple, very formulaic.
But up here in the "Grand Ol' North", everything curls like a snake with scoliosis and Pine Avenue and Chester Street could run parallel to each other, separated by 10 "blocks" for two miles, then all of a sudden intersect before changing their names to Hamilton Blvd and Briar Way!
It's chaos up here, and I've learned that after three hours driving around, driving in a city and then getting lost in the type of rural setting that would make Ma and Pa Clampett say "hot damn this is some backwater country", I've shelved "male pride" and just ask directions from the nearest guy who still has all his teeth.
I can't wait to be done with these old cities and move back to a city that was actually planned, instead of just thrown together. :)

edit: Some typos, etc.

When I drove to my friend's house in Brooklyn (I'm from Long Island), he messed up on the directions he gave me to get to his house. So, I stopped at a gas station and asked for directions. So the answer's YES!!! I would rather ask directions and get at my destination rather than waste time, gas, and add mileage to the car.

NO..

If I'm lost ...I just drive around a bit.. it gives me an opportunity to learn the city or place I am in...

My directional sense in a city flat out sucks, put me in the woods and I can usually smell my way home but not driving. So the answer is yes I'll stop whenever I get off track, like the above poster said it beats driving around like an idiot lost.
