I don't really care what people choose for thier own names. Doesn't bother me.

seriously, it's a name. who fvcking cares.

Well...names can be important to some people. I'm the last male descendant of a last male descendant of a last male descendant...basically, I'm the only one left who carries on the name. Like I said, it can be important to some people.

Exactly...I'm in the same boat

yip me too. My third kid was finally a boy so he is in the same boat as well.

Hyphenating is generally silly to me. So, somebody has to change their name. Although I realize it's always been the woman to change I see no reason to suddenly make it the man, or arbitrarily flipping a coin. Maybe it's the male chauvanist in me but if you're taking your fiance's last name you are a serious nancy-boy!!

Me too, on both sides. My mother's father had no sons, so I am carrying that family name as my middle name and my father's family name as my last name. I am the only name-carrying male on either side.

I highly doubt that there's NOBODY ELSE left in the US that doens't have your name. Post them, and we'll search.

There are only about a dozen people alive with my last name (only because my great-great-grandparents had it forcefully changed when they arrived in America), and I wanted to make sure it carries on. Thank goodness I had 3 boys who will one day keep the name going.

It IS strange, you have to admit it.

Oh, and OP, what about if a woman wrote it? So what? Does that change anything at all? How would you feel if a guy wrote it - would you call him names or say he was whipped in some way?

Sheesh.

?I?ve definitely heard more about both the husband and wife hyphenating," said New Jersey-based wedding expert Sharon Naylor. "It?s really picked up in the past few years, although it's still a very small number."
I can just see the statistics now...

"Instead of one couple doing it last year, 3 did it this year. That's a 300% increase in just one year!"

200% increase

Sheesh.

As if a guy would be such an advocate of changing their last name that he would write a story on it....except maybe someone who shops here

screw that, no way in hell i'd change my name.

course, it's not like i'll ever be able to find a girlfriend, let alone a wife, so i guess i dont have to worry about that.

I care. I must honor my family name and pass it on. I will not accept anything less.

umm...so yeh, the other 20000000 people with my surname as well...

hehe, my auntie married a guy with the same last name, so no problems...

So what happens in the next generation when...

guy Jon Smith-Thomass marries girl Jane Kent-Moss and both want to keep their names..

Do you get Mr and Mrs Smith-Thomass-Kent-Moss???

LOL, good point.

In the future, we are all probably just numbers. Actually, it's almost true now in the US. SS# means more than your name.
