is a floppy drive required to run memtest? i cant seem to find a way to run it

Yep - they require that you place it on a floppy diskette, and reboot. Once rebooted, it starts the test automatically.

d'oh, are there any other memory tests i can run w/o a floppy. a windows based program?

You can't run them in Windows because you need something that runs in kernel-mode.

There are memtest86 CD images though if you have a CD-R.

The memtest86 ISO is great for burning to a mini-CDR to have on hand for troubleshooting (now if I could find a way to put other diagnostic utilities on there along with Memtest86, to be used while booted into Windows, that would be cool).

Well, what you can do is use Nero to burn the floppy onto the CD as a boot image, and then fill the rest of the CD with the other utilities.

I have not set up a bootloader cd yet, but I have a memtest86 and a win98 on Cd-RW: I add and update the apps and other free stuff on the back end of the cd-rw, and use it as a master to burn "gifts" for friends. It comes in very handy for those who still use dialup.
