Memtest86...Need Help Interpreting Results...

i've been trying to figure out why my son's pc has been freezing intermittently for the past couple of months. did a prime95 suite of tests which it passed, but now i'm running memtest86. i'm getting a series of error reports displayed in red in the bottom section. the errors mention a series of failed addresses such as '0001d200a4c, err bits 4000'. also the main test section says, 'passed 3, errors 17'.

i'm still running it but obviously it doesn't look good. can someone help me interpret the above? do i need to replace the ram (staring at all the red on the screen it sure looks like i do)?

thanks!!!

i would try a couple things before replacement...1. if it is 2 sticks of ram in the system run each one independently and see if either one pops errors running alone, if it does then replace that stick. 2. if you dont get any errors running independently the i would reduce memory timings and maybe bump up the voltage to 2.8 or so and then rerun test.

^^ very good info there. Also, Legacy Usb should be disabled in bios if running Memtest.

i have not disabled anything, just ran memtest from a cdrom which i booted from.

at the end of the day if i have bad ram i'm going to replace it. are the results i'm seeing indicative of bad ram?

Probably. Tho if testing with Usb Legacy enabled, then there is no real way to tell if the test is accurate or not.
It does Appear to be faulty ram tho.

i just wanted to be pretty sure. for the cost of 512mb these days it's not worth spending hours over.....now i just need to find some on sale!! thx

512 mb ram is freaking cheap these days man..don't sweat it ( I don't know your version of "cheap" for me it is 🙂 ) PQI rocks !

if 1 stick of 512 too expensive for you then try two stick of 256mb might be cheaper for you. Don't bother buying generic memory they need your money but they don't care about poor memory.

One other thing - what voltage is the RAM at in BIOS?
Might want to hike it up a little, then retest.
If you get less errors, hike it up a little more etc.
2.6v to 2.8v is safe.
