I just got AMD XP 1700+ CPU (TBredB) and Kingston HyperX 512MB PC2700 (DDR333) and installed in EPOX 8K7A mobo. CPU did not like overclocking too well - I was able to hit 12.5x166 = 2.075GHz with 1.7V core voltage. Memory was running at 2.6V (as suggested by Kingston). I was able to run this system for couple of hours with Prime95 without any issues (CPU temp was 48.6C at 26C case temp) but I failed 5th test of memtest86.

I was consistently getting errors in MemTest86 step 5 only - Block Move, 64 moves, cached. The errors started show up when test was 98-99% completed. I was getting 25000 errors. When I decreased memory voltage more errors showed up so I went back to 2.6V. Also when I increased core voltage on CPU to 1.8V I was getting only 518 errors in test 5 of MemTest86. Decreasing CPU multiplier to lower value did not make any difference as well.

I use 300W Delta PS which is capable of feeding 230W of continous power. CPU cooling is Thermalright AX-7 with variable speed YSTech 80 mm fan at max speed so CPU cooling is very good plus I have plenty of case fans so I can move lots of air through my case.

This motherboard has AMD 761 chipset and VIA 686B South Bridge.

Your help is very welcome and thanks in advance so much.

EDIT: I found out the problem. It is brand new stick of Kingston HyperX PC2700 memory purchased at googlegear. Memory can pass two hours of testing in MemTest86 at 152MHz with more aggresive timing. This memory failed at 153MHz with slow timings. Running at 166FSB caused my system to be flaky. It was flaky even at 5x166 (yes). I had problems overclocking my CPU (was forced to push core voltage to 1.7V - 1.8V). I was able to make the system more stable after I increased core voltage.

CONCLUSION: It seems that memory has big impact on overclocking capability of the CPU (and hence system) including necessary core voltage adjustment and hence CPU temperature. From now on I will not overclock CPU until memory passes all test in MemTest86 at least once (one pass).

166MHz is pushing the limit of the 761 chipset. Lower your multipier first and then see if you're still getting errors. If you are, than it is not your cpu, but the memory itself or the northbridge. Also try the Memtest with memory settings at the slowest. Also this could be a power supply issue, a bunch of fans, a big stick of memory, a 166MHz fsb and a 2075MHz cpu need alot of juice.

Memtest is a must tool for an overclocker
hehe ~ we already knew that, glad you finally found it tho :D

the best way to run memtest86:
use the command options ~ C-1-2-2-3-0 to run all 11 tests with cpu cache ON.
let it run for at least 10 loops.

:)
