Basically the whole city is without power. Radio and TV stations are off the air. Thousands of trees down as well as powerlines. Downtown looks like a war zone. I just hope my house is OK.

I wouldn't expect any stories. Jackson, TN was destroyed by tornados a few months ago, buildings were leveled, houses destroyed, and there wasn't anything story about that, even in the Tennessean.

Wonder (hope) if my dad's co. will get sent down to clear all the trees from the powerlines...

Yeah Jackson was basically leveled with like 8 deaths and it didn't make national news. I had someone go by my house. Other than my patio furniture and grill, they said the house looked OK. The people that looked at it for had the siding ripped from their house. Storms suck.

Glad your house is ok. By the looks of things outside here in Nashville, we're about to catch that storm. I hope it's died down a bit.

EDIT: Right as I posted that, the Thunderclaps hit, and power went out for the entire block...we're running off our generators now.

Well, that can be expected. The story wasn't shocking or sensational enough to warrent a news story. :)

Since when is a city being leveled to the ground not a shocking news story. Half of downtown Jackson was rubble, and about 3/4 of the population were in shelters. No one cares about Tennessee because we're all a bunch of washed up rednecks ;).

There have been a number of towns in Texas that have been leveled over the years, most never make national news.

By the way, speak for yourself on the redneck thing. ;) Here is the latest on Memphis.

Memphis-AP) -- At least one person is known dead in Memphis after a strong thunderstorm struck the city this morning. Shelby County Emergency Management director Clinton Buchanan says the death was caused by a falling tree. Buchanan wasn't immediately sure whether the victim was in a car or a house. Authorities say several hundred fallen trees are blocking roads and power lines are down over a wide area. About a quarter-(m)-million customers in the midtown area of Memphis were without electricity. Buchanan also says dozens of buildings suffered structural damage from apparent straight line winds. Damage assessment teams have been sent to several areas.

:( No good. I think the worst part of the storm missed Nashville. I'm sorry for all of you in Memphis though.

Hitting Knoxville in just a few minutes. I acutally wouldn't mind a power outage for an hour or so. I get paid the same.

That reminds me...I need to save my work now.

Wow. looking at weather.com, I see Tennessee is getting the crap kicked out of it by the storms.
I wonder if it'll stop at Charlotte and follow the mountains up north?
my garden here in NC is just now drying out from a soggy June.
:(

Memphis Light, Gas, and Water has about 450K cutomers and approximately 300K are without power. Said it will be up to a week before all power is restored. I can't hadle summer in Memphis without AC. I beleive it is still a Landry's and not Joe's Crab Shack unless it changed recently.

Check out the cranes at the new FedEx Froum they are building.

My aunt who lives down there just told me they've been without power since 6am....she lives in Germantown and my grandma in Memphis....said some of the houses on her block got "tore the fvck up" by trees and such. Sounds pretty frickin' bad....she said she went to work on her day off just so she could get on the internet :) :)

I was supposed to fly into Memphis today, but they moved my flight to tomorrow. Apparently there are still outgoing flights from the airport, the planes already on the ground, but they're turning away incoming flights. Looks like the expect (optomistically?) to have the airport running again by tomorrow morning.

Hope the damage isn't as bad as it looks at first glance.

I'm sure the airport is up and running they just need to clear all the debris out of the way. It's one hell of a small airport - the entire thing is like the size one just ONE of the terminals we have at DFW
