Hi guys i have a asrock 939dual-sata2 which i love. Its been a great motherboard and overclocks well for what it is. I currently have the memory loaded with 4x512 geil value which also aren't to shabby on the overclocking just as long as your satisfied with loose timing. I have my multipliler currently at 255 with a 3800+ x2. I am looking into buying some ram so i can have 2x1024 rather than 4x512. As well as most of you know you can't increase the voltate to the ram that much with this motherboard. I know there is two main chips used in overclockable ram bh5 and another chip which i forgot the name of.
OCZ Platinum
Corsair XMS

Ok question is am i waisting my money because this ram really won't overclock unless i push more voltage to it? Is there another ram i should buy that will overclock well but i won't have to push it with high voltages? I will be pretty upset if this high end ram isn't able to even overclock as well as my geil value stuff. Which chips do the ram i linked to have? Should i look at anything else? Its out of the question to purchase a new motherboard just so i can push more voltage to the motherboard ( i will be upgrading to conroe soon and this will becoime my server). Its also out of the question to do the volt mod to this motherboard.

any help would be appreciated. I also heard the ocz is bad about the rebates. Hopefully i will get mine if i get the ocz memory but i heard the ocz is better than the corsair.

I'm using the rev 1 OCZ platinum, it doesn't OC very well either. The rev 2 is probably better, but I just use a divider, since ram speed doesn't make a lot of differance for A64's/X2's. I wouldn't put any more money in to DDR if you are planning to build a Conroe system in the near future, I'd just use a divider.

Samsung TCCD, doesn't require high volts to OC (2.65-2.75v).

As for the ICs on your ram, you have to search. Manufacturers change ICs randomly (price and availability). There is usually a REV. NO. change then.

Soooo,
OCZ 2GB (2 x 1GB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Platinum System Memory - Retail
* Model #: OCZ4002048ELDCPE-K

doesn't tell you enough to know what ICs it uses...you need the REV. No. (revision number). All it tells you is that OCZ gusrantees that the memory will run at 200mhz which is DDR400(with the latencies prograned into the SPD settings). Anyhing above is luck. That's why there are so many posts (and confusion) about memory speed and latencies. The above chips may have TCCD, BH5, infineon, ICs, whatever.

Thanks everyone for your replies. So should not not worry how overclockable the ram is because i can just set it up asyncronsly and will be able to obtain my old speed? Looks like the ocz stuff is not longer on sale so corsair will have to be the way i go or they have some patriot stuff at newegg for $120 after rebate
