Memory?

I will probably buy a computer in november and I wanna know something about RAM.

I will probably buy DDR? I don't know what type? DDR400? 433? 466? 500?

But I wanted to know what type of memory is the best for an AMD 64 CPU (with a bit of o/c)?

Also, what quantity? 512 MB or 1 GB? Actually, my computer is basically to play some games like Half-Life 2, Battlefield 2, FEAR, NFS Underground 2, KOTOR 2, Doom3...

Thanks!

To answer your question of speed, all AMD64's need DDR400, or greater. Also remember that A64's aren't the best when it comes to compatibility, so stay safe, and don't get generic/offbrand ram. Stick with kingston, crucial, ocz, geil, corsair, and a few others I'm sure some other poster will fill you in on.

I think you will get a decent boost w/ 1gb of ram, though it's not totally necessary, I believe it will be for the next gen. of games.

Well... To start off you will want to pick up atleast a gig of ram. Secondly, when O/Cing an Athlon 64 timings on the ram dont really matter, so pick up some cheap DDR 500 and you're able to O/C pretty heavily. As long as you're able to run at that bus speed, whatever timings will be non critical. (Because of Hyper-Transport)
Edit: When I say cheap DDR 500 I dont mean bad manufacturer, I mean in comparison to DDR 400 with timings rated at 2-2-2-5. A mistake I made.

BF2 and KOTOR2 will probably be a lot better with 1GB (or more) RAM.

To be honest, 512 is an extreme minimum for a gaming machine, in my opinion.
1GB is almost a must have. UT2004 for me will use all I can throw at it (when I had 1GB, it would use 900+MB, now I have 768MB, it uses 768MB).

If I take like an MSI or ASUS (K8t800 PRO or nForce 4 when it'll be available), will I have compability problems?

For the RAM... I know that in 2006, I will do another upgrade (PCI-Express and DDR-II) . I will probably take a 3500+ (cause the mobos will be better by autumn).

Is it a good solution to take like (2X256) 512 MB (limited budget) for now, and then add a (2X512) GB of RAM (in 2005)? Because anyway in 2006, I will need to change my board, my ram and my GPU.

And about the timings, I will not overclock a lot (just a bit), so what kind of DDR is better and cheaper?

DDR 400? 433? 466? 500?

DDR 400 is all you need.if your budget is limited, you might want to consider dropping the A64 thing, and getting an abit NF7-S + AXP mobile, and overclocking. That might allow you to get the full gb, which is recommended, without too big a performance drop. at least not compared to double the amount of ram.
