Memory vs hard drive dilemma

I have a data collection computer at work that uses the 440BX chipset. 3 memory slots are on the card, two used by 128MB memory modules.
My problem is the collection program uses 1.4 Gb (yes, Gigabytes) of virtual memory. My understanding is the 440BX chipset only supports 256Mb memory modules, and has a 1 Gb limit.

My question: Should I

1.) Upgrade the memory to 768Mb (I think this is the max possible)

2.) Leave it alone

3.) Any other suggestions

Thanks,
Fraggin

Virtual Memory means it uses your hard drive as "pretend memory" so your programs think they have more memory than you actually have. More RAM will make it respond faster, but isn't necesary.
