memory voltage (how high is too high?)

after looking around, everybody seems to have varied opinions on what to run their memory at...

i've been having some problems with timing my memory, so i'm trying to let my 512mb samsung pc2700 burn in at 2.9v for a few days, and if this is stable enough, i might leave it here. any opinions?

Ah common THUGSROOK... 🙂 I`ve had mine at 2.9v for several days now...

But it does have the copper heat spreader and I have a nice quiet 120mm fan blowing on it too... 😉

Bartman ~ is right, it will depend on your motherboard. there is no "direct" comparison.

heatspreaders do work! very well too.
a 120mm fan would work as well 😉 😛

Generally I recommend a maximum of an additional 10% from nominal voltage.

As DDR runs nominally at 2.5 volts, the highest I would go is about 2.75 volts. I would be reluctant to run any higher.

After giving it a little thought...? If your just trying to get better or the best memory timings with more voltage I would say no more than 2.7V...

The reason I say this is I`m running the higher voltage to get stablility at a much higher speed (at the moment not to worried about timings)

The chip I have I know will run very high but I found with the board & ram that I have I need the higher voltage to make it stable and lower the core voltage... 😉 I will be getting in the next couple of days or so a nice stick of Corsair XMS DDR 400 (PC3200) C2 and try it with default or slight increases in voltage... (have something to compare to... now)

Just for your reference- my setup:

Asus P4S533 with P4 2.0A @ ~2.7ghz running between 133-137 fsb (trying very patiently to tweak settings at lower fsb but i think i'm going to leave it at 137 with timings done by spd and 4:6 cpu-mem ratio)

512MB "true" Samsung PC2700 ram, and enermax 430 watt psu.

Does anybody have any advice with this setup? (i.e. what they've gotten their timings to/what they've got their fsb to) I have to really set down the cpu-mem ratio to get any sort of good timings with my memory. I hit 2.5-2-2-6-1 with a 1:1 ratio, but I think 4:6 with default timings runs my memory at a much faster speed. (also got 2.5-3-3-7-1 with 4:5 ratio)

Now if i could only get a floppy drive, I'd use THUGSROOK's recommended memory program...

Bartman39: I think i'll lower it back down to 2.7v then. I'm hitting the same ratios as I was then as I'm using now, plus i'm pretty happy with the whole o/c. Both my CPU and my RAM are reaching their maxes at the 137mhz fsb, 4:6 memory ratio (CPU reaches max at ~140, memory is probably near max now)

Once my Alpha hsf comes in though, maybe i'll have to buy a heatsink for my memory 🙂
