memory-usage question

hey pros. sorry if this is the wrong forum, but i swear that i just couldn't decide where to post this question AFTER looking for the right forum
ok - i figured 3dsmax, photoshop and such progs were too slow so i slapped on additional 256 megs of ram (had 128mb in my machine before). however, 3ds for example never uses more than 180mb when doing a renderjob. i mean i seriously got no clue how memory-usage in w2kpro works, but is this normal? shouldn't it still be faster to use... hmmm say 250 or 300megs? can i change the amount of ram used by the programs (changing the priority doesn't work)?
would be cool to get advice/alesson on RAM and w2k asap. thanx a lot in advance

If you were not using all the memory you had to begin with adding more isn't going to help. Is the only time you have 180MB being used is during the render job??? If that's the case the extra memory may not have a noticable effect the rest of the time. Task Manager will do a good job of showing you how much memory is being used by each process at any given time. While viewing processes go to Tools->Select Columns in the menu and you can turn on more information in Task Manager that will give you a better picture of what's going on. You can also use the memory functions in the performance module, which is found in Administrative Tools.
