I think I have a virus. When I check task manager, and I check under processes, and the image called explorer.exe, the memory keeps on increasing. Is this normal? At the moment it is ~37,000 but still increasing (firefox is at 37,200, and it just passed firefox in terms of memory usage, as I typed this up). Is this normal that it keeps on increasing like this?

that's a lot for firefox to be using too, but i get faulty readings like that if i leave the task manager open and look at mem usage, it will just keep on going.

Did your anti-virus scans come up clean? Is the "always on protection" still running? What about your anti-spyware scans?

Well, I tried to uninstall my other AV, so I had to uninstall McAffee, but the other one (Kaspersky) wouldn't work properly, so I had to uninstall Kaspersky. Now I am AV-less. But I used F-Prot's AV scanner to scan from Hiren's boot disk, and I got a couple of entries, which I simply deleted. Never though about spyware, will go and scan for that now.

Install and use AV. Using a limited user account like any sane and intelligent person would should keep most viruses at bay, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Point taken. What is a good online scanner at the moment? I don't have any AVs, as both of them have flopped. :( (both were at least a couple of years old, and won't let me re-install)

Cap't Obvious: Have you rebooted?

Try scanning with trend micro's online house call, better than nothing...

Unfortunately, I have rebooted at least twice since I thought I was infected.

I'll try TMOHC, see what comes up.

Well, I managed to fix the problem. It was just a matter of removing some spyware using Ad-Aware. I didn't have that installed (I can't believe it!) and it found like 40 things to delete on my computer. After removing those, the problem almost immediately stopped. :D
