Memory Upgrades

I would like to upgrade the RAM for two systems:

1) an old Asus K7V (Athlon Slot A) - it has 2 128MB sticks in there

2) a new Compaq Presario r3000T laptop. This one is a weird one - the accessible memory slot has a 256MB memory slot in there already, but my system has 512MB RAM (which it should). So I'm guessing the other stick is not meant to be taken out so that's why it's not accessible (because I can't find it).

So in other cases, can I install more RAM even if it doesn't match in size with the other sticks? For example, for the first system, I would like to remove one of the 128 sticks in there and put in a 513 MB stick, so it would have 128 + 513MB sticks; as for the laptop, but a 512 stick in there for a 256 + 512 sticks. Will it work, or will I have to keep the size of the RAM consistent with the other sticks?

Yes you usually can, but read the manual for you motherboard and laptop. Some motherboards are dual channel and you get better performance with a matched pair.

I would recommend you order your RAM from CRUCIAL.com. Laptops are VERY fussy about the right RAM. Use their database to look up the proper RAM for you systems. Free shipping and they send it 2 day FEDEX. I order memory for my clients from them - not worth experimenting.
