Memory Upgrade

I haven't purchased memory for a machine in quite some time so please go easy on me for asking a n00bie question:

I've got a Compaq Presario v2000z notebook. Right now it has the 1x 512mb that it came with from the store. It has only two memory slots. I've identified the type of memory that it requires (200-Pin DDR SO-DIMM DDR 333 PC 2700 or DDR 400 PC 3200).

My question is do I need to purchase the memory in the same increments as what's currently in the machine or is it o.k. to offset the memory sizes? Will the machine work if I buy a 1gb memory stick to accompany the 512mb that's already in there?
