Memory upgrade/replacement in HP notebook

Simple question: can I replace memory in HP notebook (specifically/for example, Pavilion dv7) with whatever I can buy somewhere, or is this another case of a company that wants customers to feel as miserable as possible, having to buy spare parts exclusively from it?

Looks like it.. you can just buy off newegg , amazon, or anywhere, looks like you're outside of US.. Crucial says you have ddr2.. max is probably 2x2gb, there are 2x4gb modules but they are really expensive

It's not how to physically do it that worries me, it's how HP is completely unclear about the memory. I could find maximum capacity and supported speeds in some of the online documentation, but nowhere does it say whether the damn memory is somehow HP-specific so nothing else would work. I don't feel like byuing something just to test it...

AFAIK Windows OEMs does not implement a strict limitation on specific hardware types. They do have capacity restriction but its usually because its physically(number of slots, RAM size per stick) limited as well. There's nothing to worry about the hardware restrictions unless you're buying a Mac.

That's what I was thinking and hoping for too, but you know, it's HP... They won't even let you access anything in BIOS outside of switching fingerprint sensor and the like
