if i have 4 ram slots in my mobo, 2 are filled with 512mb ram for a total of 1gb, what's the best way to upgrade to 2gb? adding 2 more 512mb to fill all 4 slots or just getting another 1gb stick?

Your system would not run with three of the four MB DIMM slots occupied. You would need to add an additional 2x512 in the remaining DIMM slots. Or take out the 2x512 you have and use 2x1 GB instead. 2x1 GB would allow you to run the RAM at 1T and remain in dual channel mode. On an AMD 4x512 commands 2T.
