memory upgrade problem

Just got my ram from Kingston which means I am now running 2 gb. But now windows gets to the loading screen where it stays for about 4 minutes and then freezes. What might cause this? The only new thing is the ram. Thanks.

First make sure it is seated properly in the slots. Apply firm pressure until both ends pop completely into the DIMM. Secondly do you have two memory sticks or just one? What you need to do if you have two is just run one stick and see if you can get beyond POST without the comp hanging. Then try the other stick be sure to test them in all your memory DIMMS. You may have some bad ram. Then run a memory test like Memtest86 or Prime95 (with heavy ram testing)

Yeah its 2 sticks. They are also firmly seated. This is ram I JUST got from Kingston because one stick of my first pair was bad. I have a very hard time believing they sent me another bad stick. There must be another explanantion. They are in slots 1 and 3, if I go to slots 1 and 2 the computer beeps on startup just like last time and nothing boots up. Thanks.

Is it possible that the bad stick burned out DIMM 2 on your mobo?
If you run the computer with only 1 stick of ram what happens? Does it boot normally
Or do you encounter the error? Also check your BIOS and make sure the memory timings are set correctly. If factory settings are bad that manually set them to where they should be. Let me know what happens!

I tried everything you mentioned and even cleared the cmos but no good, then today I tried booting with just one stick and tried both sticks one at a time but I still can't boot normally. It worked fine with 1 stick the night before I mailed my ram off to Kingston. I have an ECS Nforce4-A754 motherboard. I am tempted to just buy two new sticks of ram.

The fact it gets through the bios post test is good. The fact that WinXP ( I hope we are not talking about Win98 here) is loading and freezes makes me wonder if you dislodged another connection while installing the RAM.

Thank you. Well heres an update. Got the corsair value ram. Plugged it in and everything worked like a charm. Turned it off and went to bed, then this morning I turned it on and got continuous beeping again. Turned it off for about 30 seconds and back on again and no trouble. What's going on?

Come to think of it, this is the same symptom exhibited by my ORIGINAL 2 1 gb sticks of Kingston, before I mailed them away. I could turn it off after beeping and then it would work.

Okay new update. I got the beeping to go away but now I can't get my IDE hard drive and my SATA drive with windows on it to work together. It's one or the other, I can't get both to be recognized.

Okay, I guess I didn't really eliminate the beeping because it happened again a few minutes ago. Also loading Windows XP takes 4 to 5 minutes but it loads. Here is my system, I don't know what to do.

ECS Nforce4 A754
Athlon 64 3700
1 gb of Corsair Value Ram
Dynex DVD Drive
Maxtor DiamondMax 300gb Sata Drive
Hitachi 120gb EIDE drive
D-Link Network Card
Chaintech Sound Card

Dork,

Which HDD are you using to boot? The Hitachi or the Maxtor?
Are you using the nVidia SWIDE drivers?

What PSU are you using?
Have you tried upping VDIMM in your BIOS?

I am booting off the Maxtor. As far as I know I am using the Nvidia drivers. I use an MGE Magnum PSU and I have never touched VDIMM because I thought that I was already at 2.6v which is what the memory requires.

Windows won't even boot now. I am going to get a linux rescue cd and back my stuff up then reinstall windows. I can't think of anything else to try.

Well I couldn't find a way to run a diagnostic with just a slax bootable cd. Also, it beeped constantly on 2 consecutive power-ons today which I am taking as a bad sign. What is the likely culprit? I could go broke buying a new everything but I think its the psu. On the little LCD screen on my psu there has been a 'danger' symbol since the day I bought it.
