Memory Upgrade for Dell Notebook - Do I need to buy their memory?

Hi,
My dell 6000 came with 1 512MB memory. I want to buy another one.
Dell sells its 512 240pin PC2-4200 DDR memory for $76, but I think there are some options for half this price if I shop newegg or other online retailer.
Is it the same?
Dell claims to have designed that memory specifically for their notebook. I think that's BS what do you think?

How do I make choices regarding unbuffered x buffered? I have no idea what's on my current system.

Don't buy/upgrade from Dell, just go to Crucial or Viking or wherever and use their configurator tool that will point you in the right direction in regards to a compatable stick. 9x out of 10 it's a lot cheaper.

most of the dell comes with crucial memory.. u can just pop the bottom and look.. if its not.. it'll be hynix, infineon or samsung.. there is no "dell" memory

I had a bad experience saving $10 over crucial. Went to price grabber, saved $10 and got the memory. All worked fine. One year later the memory died. I called the company and was reminded I had a 90 day warranty. Crucial is for life as far as I know...that's where I bought the replacement. Sean
