Memory upgrade advice - moving to 2.4c

I'm going to sell my 845PE & 1.8a to my brother along with some PC2100 ram. I also have 512MB of Corsair XMS2700. In trying to keep my upgrade costs down, should I just keep the Corsair & get another 512MB of memory for dual channel or sell it and get 2x 256MB memory modules of higher speed rated memory? Am I correct in assuming I can run the Corsair memory at 5:4 & achieve a modest overclock (the 800fsb has me confused ) in the chip? Thanks!

I'm not sure what the multiplier is for a 2.4C, but I believe you're going to have to run that PC2700 at 3:2 just to be able to boot to Windows. That's assuming that ram you already have won't run 200 fsb. By the way, the 800mhz fsb is quad-pumped, so it's actually only running at 200mhz.

Hmmm... I've seen this memory tested at many sites at 180mhz, so maybe I could go with a 2.6 and 5:4 to get up to near 3GHz. But if that chip is $15 more than the 2.4 & I could get $25 for my old stick, that would almost pay for 2x 256MB sticks of faster ram and likely get above 3GHz on the overclock however I'd have less ram...

2.4c(800) = 12 x 200

Geil Ultra Platinum PC4200 DC kit is $145 shipped from newegg. I've had mine 260 FSB 1:1 @ 7-4-4-2.5 timings on my IC7-MAX3. I'm trying to find a CPU that will take me higher, as the ram is not topped out yet!! Good reviews.

Dang, man, I should have known that! I just told him that it had a 200mhz bus.:disgust:

yeah that memory will most likely hold back any overclocks you do, but i doubt that faster memory would make too big of a difference in benchmarks when all is said and done

maybe you could sell the pc2700 to your brother too... and get 2x256 of some fast pc3500 or better memory and hope for a higher fsb speed

but if money is of great concern to you then you probably wouldn't be going dual channel in the first place

good luck

You really want to run dual channel and especially since it is likely you will need to use the 3:2 ratio if you use the 2.4ghz....

It is highly likely you will get to 3.0ghz or 250fsb and with a 5:4 you wil need to run 200fsb or 400ddr...If you can pull that off it is likely you will need cas 2.5 settings or higher....NOw running 3:2 in dual channel is not all bad (I am at 292fsb) and especially if that affords you to run cas 2,2,2,6 timings at 250fsb cpu for a 333ddr or perfect match....

333ddr (3:2 at 250fsb) cas 2,2,2,6 may suck in BS sandra scores but versus 400ddr (5:4 at 250fsb) cas 2.5,3,3,8 it may only be 3-5% less.....

If using the 3:2 lets you get higher fsb say to 266fsb for 354ddr cas2 you would blow away the 400ddr at 250fsb.....Speed counts for much more in the P4 world then memory speed...The only time I see big drop in line with BS sandra mem scores is that other shite program 3dmock....Real world not much of an effect...

You may go ahead and try the pc2700 but trust me tou want to run a P4c system dual channel....

Thanks for the replies everyone! I know you all probably discussed this a year ago 6-9 months ago when you all went this route, but I didn't pay a lot of attention at the time because that wasn't the upgrade path I was pursuing...

That's where my confusion is coming in w/ the quad pumped fsb - I'm currently running the XMS2700 at DDR400, so won't it work at 5:4 ?

If your XMS2700 works fine at DDR400, then you can run it 1:1. However, if you gonna OC the 2.4C or 2.6C (whatever C you will get) probably you wil have to go to 5:4 which for instance would mean 250FSB (1000 Quadpumped) and DDR400 speed on the RAM.

The math is simple 250FSB:200RAM=5:4
