memory question

is there any difference if i have 2 128MB SDRAM Dimms compared to 1 256MB SDRAM dimm? assuming both are the same make and brand.

i notice taht buying 2 128MB dimms is cheaper than buying 1 256MB dimm. is the reason b/c of taking up DIMM slots ors omething? or is there actual differnece in performance? would having 1 dimm instead of 2 make it better for overclocking? these are just some subtle questions that crossed my mind since i never had more than 1 Dimm in my computer before.

there shouldn't be any performance difference between the two AFAIK, but i'm not positive. the reason that 2 sticks is cheaper than one is partly because of the amount of slots and partly due to the fabrication process. 256 is two-sided. i would guess that having 1 stick would be easier to overclock/more stable since it's just one less thing for the system to talk to. again, i don't have any experience with two dimms, but these are my guesses. it sounds like we are thinking along the same lines though.

No real difference if the memory works for you. It's mostly about the slots available. Some M/Bs have to use registered 256 mb dimms and some cheaper 256 dimms only work in newer Via chipset M/Bs.(same brand even) Try www.mcglen.com and check the M/B compatability list.
