I have a 128mg stick of ram that is 7ns and runs up to 143mhz at cas 3-3-3...I think it is a SynMax stick....I bought this from a trader 6mon ago before I understood a bit about cas settings..and if I ask the person now no way he will remember the memory stick to know the answer.

do you think it will run at cas 3-2-2 or 2-2-2 at 135fsb...I know try it..well I am concerned if I do and the ram flakes out will I be able to get into the bios to reset it and if not how can I reset it back to cas 3-3-3...so the system runs
Thanks for any help

What motherboard are you using? Usually, if the memory doesn't work and the computer locks up, you can get into the bios by pressing the Del or F1 key at startup. Some motherboards have the option to return to default settings by pressing the Insert or F10 at bootup.

Have no idea if the ram will handle the new settings.

I'm no ram expert, but I don't see why you couldn't get back into the bios. If it doesn't work, the system will just hang. Reboot, and there you go. I may be missing your meaning here, but the ram settings don't do anything to change the physical attributes of the ram itself (if that's your concern), just the timings of the chipset/cpu. Anybody confirm this, or correct me if I'm wrong ?

My mobo is a Msi 6163 pro...should have added this...I just want to find out if I would need to reset the cmos by removing jumpers on the mobo or whether I would be able to do this via the onscreen bios.

Thanks

Don't worry about it. You will be able to get into the BIOS.

If your ram starts to flake you will get lockups or error messages when entering windows or during 3D applications.

No matter what RAM timings you set you will be able to get into the BIOS.

However this does not apply with the cpu. With the CPU you will need to re-set the BIOS in some cases.

So go ahead an mess around with RAM timings. It's safe.

Well I went ahead and played with the CAS settings ...my SyncMax ram is CAS3 tracked down there website my other stick is Infineon and will run CAS2 at up to 137/138...so tried CAS2 anyway...and no go....finally got back in the BIOS and everything defaulted back and had to reset cpu speed etc...
Tried CAS 3-2-2 and all seems well...not sure if these settings are any faster over CAS 3-3-3

Thanks for all your help
