I've seen it said on this forum before that the 2*1 gig would be better.

Less connections having to be run through or something. Someone technical will come in here sooner or later to tell you the long winded version :p

Performance wise it really won't make any difference. That said, 2*1gig leaves the extra slots open to add additional memory in the future, whereas with 4*512 you will probably be full. If it's worth the extra cost for the larger modules is up to you.

Did you go reserach users of that board?? It may take a lot more vdimm, relaxed timinsg and speeds to work....ONly trust those who have tested it on there same board....

Like I said on my MSI Nforce 3 ultra board it reverts you memory to lower speed when using 4 dimms...I dont know if there is a work around it....

There is also the issue with the CPU clocking the memory down when you have all the slots full. This is not a problem with the system per se, just a limitation of the onboard memory controller on the current revision of Athlon64/FXs. Supposedly the newer revisions due out in about a month or two will fix this issue. So for now have all the memory slots filled will clock your DDR400+ to DDR333 speeds. Although, I have heard that with some memory modules you can clock them back up to DDR400 speeds later on in the BIOS.

The info is available from ASUS here.
