What are the differences between the 2 Corsair and Crucial? I just replaced my Corsair ddr-2 667 with Crucial ddr-2 800 (4 sticks for a total of 3 gigs) one of the 1 gig sticks is bad. Ive always brought corsair but looking at the newegg reviews im giving them a try. Since 1 stick is bad im trying to decide whether to send everything back and get ddr-2 800 from corsair or just rma the bad stick? my mobo is a p5k-e wifi.
Do you all prefer one over the other in general?

The Crucial will definitely be using fast Micron ICs whereas the Corsair are more likely to use ProMOS, Samsun, Infineon or Elpida although they may also have Micron but this is less likely. The Micron are far more likely to give a stable overclock. The Micron ICs used on the Crucial modules do not like heat and have been known to fail if the temps get too high. It is advisable to use a fan over these sticks particular if they are overclocked and/or overvolted.

And to answer your second question, out of the two models I would be buying the Crucial as I enjoy overclocking and they would likely get well over 1000MHz with nice timings. The Corsair would probably be less likely to perform so well. If your plan is not to overclock then Corsair is a good stable product and may suit your needs well. The choice is yours.

Crucial is a part of Micron:

That's a guarantee of Micron IC's in Crucial memory modules.

btw Phillyman.

if your gonna RMA the stick then RMA both sticks that came in the kit. Shouldn't make any diffrence but it's just nice to have a matched pair.

RMA. It's just a bad stick. Much ESD stuff is FUD, where you can touch the case every now and then and be fine. RAM, though, genuinely is sensitive as hell to ESD. It happens every now and then--be careful. I have killed RAM by walking with it over carpet 😛. Who knows, it may have been a stick that shouldn't have passed QC, too. Warranties on the RAM exist for good reason, as do the good reputations of Crucial and Corsair.

crucial has had lots of RMA problems (at least for me, had to RMA 2/5 sticks) and they run at 2.2v compared to the corsair's 2.1v

I've heard a lot of people having compatibility issues with the Ballistix ram. I don't have any personal experience with it, although I did like using Crucial for their Micron IC's for my old rig. Unfortunately, Micron doesn't seem to manufacture any 2GB chips so there are no 2x2GB Micron kits. You may want to look up your hardware and the ballistix just to make sure you won't have any issues, if you're planning to buy them.

One more note, people have told me that just because Crucial is a subsidiary of Micron, it does not necessarily mean they HAVE to use Micron IC's. They can and will if they want to, but they are also open to using other IC's, for example for their 2x2GB kits.

I believe there's a ramlist out there somewhere that lists IC's used by quite a few memory modules.

Edit:
Here it is- http://ramlist.ath.cx/
