Memory Problems

I have narrowed my problem to the RAM or the DIMM slots.

I have:
AMD 64bit 3000+
Asus K8N with newest Beta BIOS
512MBx2 Kingston PC3200
Asus N6600 256MB Videocard

So this is slightly complicated. I installed both DIMMS in Slots 1,2. The computer locks up just after POST. Memory Test shows the 1024MB ram at 400mhz.

With the DIMMS in slots 1,3...The computer will boot but is extremely unstable. Memtest86 gets errors during the 1st test.

With the DIMMS in slots 2,3 the computer runs fairly well. Although the ram is at 333mhz.

Each DIMM will run fine by itself in all 3 slots.

Is there anything obvious that I might have missed in the BIOS? Everything is set to auto still.

I just manged to get it to load memtest86 with the DIMMS in Slots 1,2. It froze 46% into the first test though.

hI tmac8,
run Memtest with your ram in slots # 2 & 3..if both ram cards are OK..
then .. it's the BUS on the motherboard OR the outside chance it's some weird problem with your ram speed.... which might be changable.
Hope this helps

thanks for the ideas, I will try the complete test in slots 2,3. I thought I tried it, but didn't have it writen down.

I will also try that offical BIOS, good idea.

Thanks guys

well that sucks. Tried the RAM in slots 2,3 and passed memtest about 8 times before I stopped. Then tried every BIOS version avialble and had the same errors with each one. Come Monday I will be asking to have the motherboard replaced on, it is only a week old.

Thanks for the help, please post any other ideas that I could try.

Hi again tmac8,
Yeah .. bad MB's which are new.. that really does S**k 🙁
Call your supplier & get a return authorization # before you send it back.
Quality parts suppliers should replace it for free. 🙂
Good Luck
