Memory problems with IBM 600e

Just got a new 256mb memory chip, installed it in place of one of the existing 64mb chips on my 600e. on boot theres like 4 clicks that come from the speakers and then the system freezes (with new chip installed) before it starts windows.

is the memory defective or is it not supported by the 600e?

specs are:
PC100
142 pin (i think, it DOES fit into the slot in the mobo without force)
mem chips are apparently samsung chips.

IBM are "picky" with the memory you put into it, in fact IBM is picky with anything you put into it. Try a BIOS update. And/or put the memory in a computer that can support it to see if it works.

you need to use low density pc100, if it is the more common high density it usually won't work, or might boot but only show as 128mb.
