Hi.

I Just built two new systems (identical, AMD x2, 4 gig ram). Anyways, one has been working perfectly for the last month (we will call it computer A) and the other has just been sitting in the cupboard (it wasnt time to install it yet, we will call it computer B)

Anyway, i went to install it today (B) and it would not POST (has onboard graphics and nothing would come up, and it would not make the beep sound). Anyways I took the memory out of it and put in another piece of memory (was a new one that i had lying around) and it worked. I took the memory out of computer A, which works and put it into computer B and it would not work, but it would work if i put it back into computer A.

Basically, the memory taken out of computer B wont work in any computer
The memory taken out of computer A will work in computer A but not computer B

Is this a sign of a bad motheboard and memory or what do you think?

They are brand new systems so i think its weird.

Check the voltage required for the ram in B. Maybe it needs 2.0V and the motherboard's only supplying 1.8V. So try 2.0V and if that doesn't work, it's probably a bad stick.

ok the motherboard supports 1.8v and im using this memory but it doesnt say what voltage it is.

if its the voltage though, why would the same type of memory work in the exact same system (computer A)?

I've found conflicting information on that ram. Some say it's 1.8V and some say it's 1.9V. Could come down to different batches. Even then, it varies from stick to stick. So try 1.9V. Other possibility is that it's dead, in which case you should try to get an exchange.

Ok thanks for the reply. I dont know a whole deal about memory. When you say "try 1.9v", do you mean try and find a stick that is 1.9 or what?

thanks mate

You need to manually set the memory voltage to 1.9v in your bios. If you think you have a bad module, test each module individually with www.memtest.org for 3-5 passes.

You'll have to boot with the working stick, change voltage and then try the sticks in question. Also try 1 stick at a time and in each of the ram slots. I've seen quirky things happen such as certain sticks not wanting to run in certain slots.

ok just went through the bios and theres no settings at all for the memory. i read somewhere that this is a shit board and that it has literally no settings for overclockers so yeh.....

if it was the voltage though...wouldnt the memory in it have never worked?

just dont want to take this memory back and them tell me it works... will look like a noob ha

thanks

ok this is gonna be a hard one to understand....

i have a generic memory module and 2 xms modules that i originally put in.

up until now it was only booting with the generic in slot 1.

it will now boot with any of the xms as long as its in slot 2. if i put another memory module in slot 1 (no matter if its xms or the generic) it will not boot.

the memory says 1.8v on both of them so i dont think its the voltage.

so to recap...

will boot with xms in slot 2 (but cant use slot 1)
will boot with generic in slot 1 (but cant use xms in slot 2)

faulty board?

Saw this thread. Appears the board is problematic.
Also, try updating bios, as you never know if that may solve the problem.

Beyond that, if you don't already know that Ctrl + F1 reveals extra menus in Gigabyte bioses, you should see what that may reveal and try things like single vs dual channel mode.

Based on the limited info you have posted, it sounds like you have at least 1 baed MOBO OR you have MOBOs that cannot supply the needed 1.9v for the memory. Does your bios allow you to adjust the memory voltage at all?

ok so without changing anything it will now boot with the generic module in slot 1 but not xms. also i had both xms in before and it would sorta boot but the graphics would be everywhere but you could still go into setup and stuff but it was unreadable as if the vga plug was half out............
