Memory problem with Windows 98

I have a problem with a windows 98 system and memory. It has 96 MB ram in it. Immediately after I boot up the system, I go into Sisoft Sandra and check memory information. It says that available RAM is 1%. There aren't that many programs loading on startup, and I even went in and removed a couple of the larger ones, but available memory is still at 1%. It was even at 0% one time I checked.

The strange thing is, this doesn't effect the system at all.....except for microsoft word. I can load up internet explorer, excel, and outlook with no problems at all. When I try to load MS Word, it starts giving me all kinds of errors about low resources and then locks up the computer.

Another thing I noticed in Sandra is that the swap file isn't being used at all. It is reporting 100% free.

Is this going to be a situation where I just need to re-install everything? Or is there hopefully a way to fix this problem.

Any help would be appreciated!!

Thanks!

Whever I saw resources dip below 40% on 98 I started to see problems. Do you have AV software running? Good definitions? This kind of thing sounds more like a virus than anything else. With 96 megs of ram you should have plenty of memory for Word and anything else (at least for 98. 2000 or XP is a different story).
