guys, i need your input on this one. Which memory has a better performance, 512MB PC2100 266Mhz cl 2.5 or 256MB PC3200 400Mhz cl 3. I got both and I need to make sure which one is better. BTW, system is P4 3.0Gigs 800FSB.

Thanks in advance.

follow-up question:

but, can I combine this two? i.e., a pair of 256megs 2100 and a pair of 128megs 3200 (768megs total), would they function at the slowest speed of the modules I installed?

TIA

Most likely you can combine them and they will run at the slower speed. Memory compatibility is so bizzare these days that you'll just have to try it, just make sure the pairs are in the corrct, matching dual channel slots. Be sure to create an ERD or do a system restore point before trying in case Windows gets corrupted. Also be aware that mixing up ram like that can lead to some bizzare, random events....especially on a dual channel system.

Personally, I doubt the added benefit of the extra ram will out weigh the sheer speed of the PC3200, unless he's always working with HUGE files like video editing. Your talking about going from 400MHz DDR down to 266MHz, significantly slower.

Good Luck!

thanx for the input Bad, i'll prolly stick with the 3200 for now. I just hate to use the 512megs 2100 as a dust collector. :frown:

Sell the extra ram on the For Sale forums! Then, take that money and buy some more PC3200. Hell, you might even find someone to trade with. :)
