Sorry for the shouting... I am getting ready to put my P4PE 2.4B C1 rig together and the last choice I have to make is Memory. I am agonizing over whick memory to feed this box. I am stuck between the choice of Crucial PC2700 vs Corsair PC3200 XMS? I want to o/c, but is the Corsair PC3200 XMS really going to be worth it in the long run? Is is more than DOUBLE the cost of the Crucial PC2700. $75 vs $160!

Any feedback from you AT veterans would be appreciated.

Yah that's the problem I'm running into. Personally I think I'm going to buy 2x512 PC2700 of Crucial simply because if I went the Corsair route I'd only be able to get 1 512meg chip and then it might be a couple of months before I can afford another one. Of course I could just go 2x256 Corsair but then I just hamstring myself in the long run because those sticks will be worthless to me when I want to take my dual DDR board up to 1 gig.

...if all youre concerned about is statistics.

And then, if it ended up your games or whatever getting 10% more fps (just a illustrative example) then thats a 10% boost from a $85 increase spent on, say, a $1000 system? That scenario would be 10% increase in performance for 8.5% increase in cost ;) Performance should be measured with regard to the expected effect on overall performance of whatever you use the comp for, not for when comparing two benchmark results.

Might seem an abstract post but pointing out what the objective should be :)

What exactly is the performance difference in the real world when over clocking these both sticks on a P4 2.4B C1? Also if you go with two sticks I have been told that there is a 'decrease in performance' when overclocking? I would be happy getting my 2.4B up to 2.8 or 3.0 stable on air. Is this possible with the Crucial PC2700?

Decisions... Decisions...

it should be possible since i can get my 2.26 up to 2.55 with 2100, and am upgrading to 2700 so i can get it up to 2.7.

If you're looking ddr400.. why are you looking at crucials pc2700, when they have pc3200?

$153 vs. $160, yup you save $7! If you want DDR400 speeds, get some Kingston Hyper-X PC3000 256MB $50 (512mb $90) or Hyper-X PC3500 for $74 per 256MB stick at Excaliberpc.com. All all Hyper-X PC3000 will do DDR400 with pretty decent timings.

Well, I thuoght he was referring to the 256 MB sticks, which would be $59.77 vs $75. Shrug, otherwise $75 for 512 of 2700 corsair just doesn't make sense. If so then teh 160 would also be referring to 256 mb which is $95 here for pc3500.

Actually I was refering to one 512M Stick... Some good suggestions, but I am still a bit undecided... Grrrrrr! :)

Would I be better off going with 2 sticks of Crucia PC2700 512M instead of 1 Corsair PC3200 XMS? What exactly is the issue with reduced overcocking with running 2 sticks?l

Again, why not go for the crucial pc3200 instead of pc2700, is there a reason for putting the pc2700 first? Kinda makes it a level playing field then with corsairs pc3200.. but the corsair is better overclockable or so I've heard.

Isn't Corsair just Sammy Orig with heatspreaders? Why not check out some sammy orig ram it overclocks real well. my DDR266 is @ DDR300 not that big of an increase but at stock Volt and Cas2 !

I think i made ur choice harder... :)

Not sure if u can buy Sammy Pc3200 tho, worth the time to chec some out

Depenhds on the system your building..if its AMD then the pc2700 since pc3200 isn't going to really give you any performance boost. Unless you plan on buying ANOTHER cpu when the 400bus 3200+ Barton comes out..i think thats the one..Then you might as well get the 3200 to save you money later. If your building a P4 system..well I don't know much about them but i think the 3200 would help you there performance wise. And where are you getting 512 mb of pc2700 cas2 corsair for $75? =)

Its a lot harder to overclock ram when you have more than one stick. My case here is an exmaple: I had one stick of Kingston 2700 cas2.5 512 mb ram..I was able to to overclock that to 142x2mhz at cas2..not much..but after i got another stick (don't ask me why i needed it >< ugh) cas2 at stock speeds didn't even work nemore!! >< So now its running at cas2.5 133x2..i can still overclock to 141x2 but thats also cas2.5. Cas2 basically doesn't work anymore sniff. I can get my system to post at 148x2 cas2 actually (with just one stick) but windows blue screens =P
