Memory limit with Windows?

With memory prices so low, I'd like to bump up to 512mb+. I've heard that Windows will not use any memory above a certain amount. Is there any truth to this rumor? If it's true is it only valid for certain versions of Windows? Thanks!

I wish this forum had a faq.

Windows nt/2000 can use up to a few gigs I believe.

Windows 98 doesn't know what to do with anything over 640k because it's dos based. The problems arise when you decide to boot up. it does a half a$$ed job at 256MB probably, but who knows after that.

Windows 98 was built for 512MB max, so 512MB will work ok, anything higher will mess up your computer. Well im using Windows XP Professional Beta 2 and it handles up to 4GB of memory, if you get windows advanced server or whistler advanced server it will handle over 100GB of memory

NT and 2k pro is 4gb, but divides it up so its not toally useable. NT enterprise and 2k advanced server help some (by splitting it in other ways than 2GB-2GB, I think it does 3GB-1GB) and I think that 2k Advanced Server maxes at 8GB or 16GB depending on motherboard architecture (they must be specially made).

win9x(ME) ONLY USES ONE CPU, don't listen to 00astroguy00. Also with winNT/2k to use above 4 cpus you must again have specially made motherboards.

Pretty much you need to go get on technet and read for a while.

All 32-bit Windows versions (apart from Win2K AS and DC) can ADDRESS up to 4GB of RAM.

Win2K Advanced Server supports up to 8GB of RAM and Win2K DataCenter can support up to 64GB of RAM.

Windows 95, Windows 98, 98SE and Millennium Edition can only physically ACCESS a maximum of 2GB of RAM.

Win9x/ME can go up to 512MB of RAM before it requires an adjustment to the vcache to use more RAM.

For more information regarding the 512MB limit and the workaround, see this article.
