Memory Latency

As far as I know, I have 2 sticks of 2.5, but cpuz says both are running at 3.

what could be going on here?

Go into the BIOS and manually change the latencies to what the should be (instead of by SPD change it to manual and then change the latencies). There is good article about memory right now on anandtech.

There are many factors that affect Latency:

1. System BIOS reads the intended latency from the SPD of the memory module, a chip that stores information about the module. You can change the latency in the system BIOS, though only within a certain range.

2. When the module is built, the manufacturers will program the BIOS to a particular latency. Original modules follow standard latency. Module retailers will buy certain parts that offer better latencies and will program the SPD to a relatively low latency that is safe.

3. Memory chips are build with different dies. Certain chip dies offer better performance from others. The good retailers are picky about buying the right chips, since a better die can offer better performance.

The right combination of die, brand name chips, and good PCB board are key to making modules with low latencies.
