I have an old Gigabyte board which takes 184pin pc2700 memory, I am planning to upgrade soon but not until I finish uni (love games too much and don't trust myself :p). I am looking to upgrade my memory now but want something that'll work in both my current and future board (looking at MSI Platinum SLi but will wait to see whats out nearer the time).

Do I go for a 1gb stick of PC4000 or a 512mb of pc3200 (both Crucial Ballistix) with the view to buying a matched stick when i upgrade my mobo. Will there be a big difference in performance if i use memory that is too fast for the board?

First, there is no such thing as too fast of memory speed for mobo but never the other way around. You can always ran faster rated rams but not slower than the mobo FSB. RAMs will only run as fast as your mobo dictates which is based on your CPU FSB. In short buying a faster ram today is good for future upgrades. Unless, the future holds DDR2 which is incompatible with DDR1. Go for the 1 GB PC 4000
