Memory for Canon S230

Hey y'all. I'm going to receive my Canon S230 that I ordered from Dell. I'm just confused as to which brand of CF memory I should get. So far, the ones I've seen are SimpleTech, Viking, and Sandisk. I've read that Sandisk is slow, so which one should I get?

Does anyone know what's the max CF memory that I can use in the S230? Would a 512MB or 1GB card work? Also, should I get a CF card reader or will the USB cable do fine?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Excellent choice in the camera by the way...

You'll need to use Type 1 Compact Flash cards... any size will work. True, Sandisk are slower than others, but the difference between the various CF cards is minimal with a 3.2 MP camera.

EDIT: You don't need to waste additional $$ on the CF reader if you don't mind plugging your camera into your PC or laptop to transfer pictures every time you need to do so. I believe that CF cards over 512MB large are Type II CF cards which would not work in your S230. The benefit in getting a CF reader is that you don't have to attach your camera to your PC therefore saving battery power, but the Canon Lithium Ion battery will give you hours of usage.

Thanks for the reply MasterHoss. I was looking at the Viking thread and came across this link. Some 512MB are actually Type 1 (Sandisk, Viking). Would I be okay if I got the Viking CF card?

Where do the difference in speeds lie? In the time that it takes to write pictures?

I use Viking CF memory in my S330, and it's a top rated card.

You will find that read/write speed varies among mfgs.

Yes, as John stated, different cards advertise and actually perform faster than other CF cards (in terms of read, write, or both). Try Digital Photography Review's run down on some CF cards' performance. Note that the review is a little old but it's still worth looking at.

All in all, since you're only going to be taking pictures that are approximately 1.5MB large (your S230 set to it's highest settings), you won't really notice a difference in write or read times of any CF card.

Thanks for all the advice. I think I'm going to get the Sandisk Ultra 512 from Dell for $97. 🙂

EDIT: Just a quick question on the movies feature of the camera. Should I be concerned about the write speed of the CF card if I'm recording movies?
