We have a couple of gateway 600yg2 laptops. These are older units 15" screens with a slower p4 processor. 512MB of memory (2 slots filled)
I decided to take one home and with xp sp2 installed it runs like mud. I want to upgrade the memory and all gateway could tell me was their memory and it as 1G max.2X512 as far as they can tell.

can this unit use a single 1G stick or does it have to be matched pairs of 2x512?
Some sites have corsair pc2700 so dimm sticks 512MB for $27... is a so dimm a so dimm LOL

is all this ddr memory the same?

so can I use one stick or 2 and is all the memory just memory ?

thanks for any and all help and info
Not sure exactly what I am going to do with this thing...so far log in to check email.

it has 2 exp slots...extra battery in one...ext hard drive in the other....along with a dvd player to swap out...and a docking station.
Must weight 10lbs ....after looking everywhere I can't find the wheels

Memory
The Gateway® 600YG2 notebook comes with two 200-pin industry standard DDR-SODIMM sockets that can accept 128-megabyte (MB), 256-MB, or 512-MB 266-MHz DDRAM memory modules. The memory is expandable up to 1,024 MB. Modules can be easily added or replaced.
Use this information to visit our Accessory Store and purchase additional memory modules for your Gateway 600YG2 notebook.

OR

Use Memory Locator to find memory upgrades specific to your serial number.

The above has been copied from the Gateway support website.

Your laptop supports PC 2100 DDR So-Dimm's, so make sure that the PC 2700 memory available in stores is rated for PC 2100 speeds, too (266 MHz).

You will not make it faster by buying the faster memory - the Memory Bus will only work at 133MHz (for 266MHz DDR speed) and is not adjustable.

I do not think the chipset will support only one 1 GB module, I would get 2 x 512MB, as they recommend.

Good luck!

thank you very much for clearing this up for me.

The only reason I was buying 2700 was it is the cheapest thing online right now.

$27 for a 512MB module..

so I will get 2 and give this dinosaur a test.
