Memory Cooling

I just purchased a 512 MB stick of PC2100 DDR from Fry's for $125 (I know... It's probably junk)

While I was at it, I picked up Thermaltake memory cooling kit for $9. It consists of two heat spreaders and two heatsinks blue-anodized aluminum.

Thermaltake DDR cooling kit

I thought I might get some additional performance out of this generic memory by bumping the voltage some.

(When memory prices come back down, I can get some good quality PC2700 to go with my P4S333 & 1.6 woodie 😉

Has anyone used this kit? The instructions seem straightforward enough. They supply some double-sticky stuff to attach the spreaders to the ram chips, but I thought arctic silver adhesive might be a better choice. Would there be any point in lapping these heatsinks?

Any thots or opinions ?

I don't see much point in lapping heatsinks for RAM...but that's just me. The heatspreader and sinks should work fine as is.

!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT USE THE STICKY !!!!!!!!!!!!

i have it too and i used the sticky to my dismay. for 1 thing... its sticks... all tooooo good. its a REAL pain to take it off the ram. trust me when i say you WILL want to take it off someday and when u do u will regret using the sticky. heres the best way to use it:

1st: secure the ram in the DIMM slots
2nd: apply both spreaders on the ram and clip it secure

thats it.

if u put it on the ram 1st and try to push it into the DIMM slots it will move and not allow the ram to clip into the DIMM slots. but as i covered b4 its better not to have an almost permanent ram cooler stuck on ur ram. it works better NOT having the sticky cuz its contact is direct.

i had the sticky and PAINFULLY removed the sticky from it and the ram.

Thanks for the insight, DC!

Do you suppose a dab of AS3 (paste, not glue) would do any harm ?

Did you just use the heat spreaders, or did you also use the sinks supplied?
