Memory clarification

Hi,

I am a little confused with the tyes of RAM available.

The motherboard that I was intending to purchase is now discontinued but it seemed to be the only one that would support dual-DDR2.

I am looking for an equivalent motherboard to use with my P4 2.5GHz processor (Skt 478) and am baffled with the different memory types.

What does PC2100,4300 etc mean?

DDR400/DDR2

533MHz

Is there a guide on this website about the different types of memory?

Thanks!

DDr400 = pc3200 in 184 pin
DDr333 = pc2700
DDr266 = pc2100
DDr2 533= pc4200 in 240 pin

Amd cpus won't use DDr2 until the m2 is released later this year.

PC2100, 2700, 3500 etc. is an indication of the theoretical bandwidth (in MB's per second) the sticks should have... Of course these are linked to speeds... You have to divide the "bandwidth number" by 16... Then you'll have the speed in MHz...

For example, PC3200 is 200MHz, but seeing that we're talking about Double Data Rate RAM, you have to double it to obtain its effective speed... Inthis case 400MHz...

DDR is a 184-pin solution, frequently needing 2.5 - 2.6V to operate, whereas DDR2 is 240-pin and only needs 1.8V...

In that case, my next question is, does anyone know of any current skt. 478 motherboards that support DDR2-533MHz?

@ Nirach: Yeah of course, Mushkin is a pretty well-known manufacturer of memory... They make decent sticks (their Redlines are true enthusiast sticks...)

@ MJoshi: Not that I know of... The mobo's for their Socket 775 line mostly support DDR2, and for AMD, it's still waiting for Socket AM2 to arrive...

EDIT: Which discontinued mobo had the DDR2 actually...?

It seems like there are indeed some mobo's for Socket 478 that support DDR2... My mistake... SiS and Via are producing those, but they are more orientated to India and South America, because the people have less money, and S478 mobo's still represent 40% of all the mobo's sold there...

The following chipsets are the ones you're looking for:

SiS 662: S478, PCI-Express, DDR and DDR2

Via P4M890: S478, PCI-Express, DDR and DDR2

It seems like they both have integrated video too... There is another alternatives as well:

Via PT900: Should support all the same things like the abovementioned chipsets, but there is practically no information to find on these chipsets... The same goes for the other two... 🙁

I remember seeing an Asus motherboard that uses the Intel 915P chipset and supports DDR2-533MHz?

I am not too keen on VIA chipsets as I have had problems with them in the past?

The SiS 662 only seems to support DDR2-667?

I cannot find any motherboards that ship with the SiS 662 chipset here though.

You're right, this chipset supports DDR2, but for S478, Asus only lists the P4GD1 on their site... That one has the i915P, but only support for regular DDR...

Via isn't the greatest for Pentium, but I wouldn't classify them as "bad"... If the SiS 662 supports DDR2 667MHz, it will take the DDR2 533MHz as well eh... 🙂

EDIT: The i915P mostly has DDR2 support in combination with Socket T (775) processors, so it's not weird of having seen such a mobo...
