memory cas

i have two sticks of 512 geil memory cas 2.5 3 3 6.....i have an abit nfs and want to do dual channel with 2gigs by adding a stick of 1gig ....the problem is that most 1 gigs are cas 3 ....and the 2.5 cas gigs are few or way more expensive...i was wondering would the cas 3 gig work... i have tried loosening my timings to cas 3 but system wont boot....any info would greatly be appreciated

Yes, it will just default to the slower speed. It's really not a good idea to add more then 1GB of ram because the computer will default to DDR333 speeds so cas lantecy speeds are the least of your problems.

i dont mind if it defaults to cas 3 but why would it default to ddr333 if it is ddr400

I think its something to do with the memory controller not having enough bandwith to run 3 dimms @ DDR400. Probably wrong though

NF7-S can run up to 2GB DDR-400 or 3GB DDR333.

I think if you use the 3rd dimm slot you can't use dual channel though.
