Memory card causing system to crash?

I have a generic USB 2 compactflash card reader. Usually the first time I put a card in/take it out, it'll work fine. Then after a while, the I'll stick the CF card into the reader and immediately my whole system reboots. Can anyone figure out why this is happening? I'd really appreciate it -- I've been living with this for a long time now 🙁
Thanks!

My mobo is USB 1.1 (yes I know, ancient), so I'm using an adaptec expansion card that gives me a 3 USB2.0's and a couple firewire slots. Do you think it has something to do with the firmware of the card?

The firmware of the card, or the drivers for the expansion card. Have you tried just using it in one of the built-in USB ports?
