Memorex scanner (staples) problems: TWAIN error

Hello,
I did a search and didn't find anything about this, so here goes. I got the scanner from staples (memorex 48u), followed all the directions, even tried installing some other drivers others have recommended, and now when I click the scan button, I get the following two pop-ups:

Cannot operate scanner:
Check whether scanner connected to computer (yes it is)
Make sure scanner connects to the power and the LED is on (it's USB, no other power -- and the LED is green and on)
Note that you cannot connect the scanner to the bus power device. (What? Whatever that means, I tried two different USB ports and get same message both places.)

THEN when I click ok I get:
TWAIN error!
Failed to open the TWAIN driver.

AARGH!! Any help out there? I am running Win XP, BTW.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks all
Goldie

I think that means it can't be USB-powered and you need to connect an external AC adapter to power it. But if it doesn't come with one, that's weird.

"Note that you cannot connect the scanner to the bus power device." means that it cannot be connected to an unpowered USB hub. (Even powered USB hubs can have problems working with certain devices). Connecting to a USB port on the motherboard should be OK.
If you switch the USB connection to a different one, then you must go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall, reboot, then re-install the drivers.
The latest drivers can be found here: Text, but are the same version as on the CD.
