Looks like the same unit that Amazon is offering for 109.

Even with the mixed reviews on the mp3.com boards, I'm probably gonna pick one up for my car.

The ad says it's model mpd8505cp.

I actually didn't know Memorex has 2 models out. What's different between them??

Maybe it's one of those deals like the Ipaq where they have different model numbers for the same item just depending on where you purchase it.

Not this time.

The picture of the 8505 at Amazone.com shows more controls then the pic of the 8500 at Memorex.com.

Does anyone know if this one can play cdrws? I've seen another player made by a different manufacturer and they had two models too, except one of them could only play cd-rs not cd-rws.

Is this even truly a big deal? CDRs are so cheap anyways. Personally, I have some CDRW discs but never use them.

I think it is a pretty big deal. There are other mp3-cd players out there that can play both types of discs, and still cost about the same as this memorex one... I actually found one that is $2.95 cheaper which can play both cd-r and cdr-w discs at easybuy2000. Why not get the most for your money? I would just rather not have any restrictions on the type of disc I use. Oh yah, and by the way, I found out that this memorex one has 45 seconds of antishock while the easybuy has 50 secs.

Here is the link for the easybuy one for people who want to compare the two.

Geneman,

Good luck with the MPTrip player. A coworker of mine got that player, he returned it a few weeks later.

That player doesn't support ID3 tags, so the songs just show as 1-99 or whatever. It also has no search ability to find songs except ff or rewind. If you just wanted to hear a specific song, that could be a lot of fast forwarding to get to it.

From what I've read, the Memorex allows you to search by song title or artist name.

Is it confirmed that this player has ID3 support? That makes all the difference in the world for a mp3 cd player.

I was able to pick one up at Target this morning. Actually, it was the last one and was locked up in the back which the salesperson had to retrieve for me.

Some observations:

 1. * This player has more buttons on the face than the picture the Memorex Web site.
 1. * I burned a quick disc - a Nashua @ 8x and so for, don't notice any skipping.
 1. * I haven't heard any static yet, but I guess the verdict is still out.
 1. * The quality of the player appears much cheaper than that of my Aiwa CD player.
 1. * I'm using enclosed Panasonic headphones and it sounds great - plenty of volume and I'm not using the bass boost switch.
 1. * Target has a 90-day return policy. I think I'll hold onto it for now and see what appears within the next month or so.
 1. * Overall, it's not too bad. I think being able to burn MP3 music to CDs has much more flexibility than buying a Rio, Nomad or other device where the memory is fixed.

I can't comment on the ID3 feature at this time - I'll try it out later and follow-up with some additional comments at that time.

Yes, it has the AC and car adapters included.

The best part of this whole deal is my Target receipt where it says I can return this item prior to 3/10/2001 - or 90 days from when I purchased it. Prior to that date, my player is going back. Mine is experiencing the "pause" issue that has been reported. About every 20 minutes, a gap will appear in my music when the machine pauses for a few seconds. Also, as I mentioned above, the construction of this device is really, really cheap - when compared to my Aiwa CD player.

With so many other possibilities hitting the street shortly, please pass on this device - something better will be released.

Rather than go buy one with a good chance of returning it, I'll ask you folks.

With this unit, and any others, do they spin the disc the whole time or do they read the data off the disc to onboard memory and only spin up when necessary? Much of what I do is very low bitrate (old time radio shows, audio book, etc where the average bitrate is 32). To have the disc spinning all the time when a few meg buffer would provide a half hour of playback wouldn't interest me.

Thanks

Try the CLASSIC CM415 at CircuitCity. It has a better review than the Memorex 8505.
And it only cost about $10 more.
