Memorable DOS games

Don't forget all of Sierra's adventure games; King's Quest, Space Quest, Leisure Suit Larry...

And if you can snag an old Roland MT-32 sound module (like I've always had!) you can enjoy these games the way they were SUPPOSED to sound! 😀

Jack jazz rabbit
Aladdin
Lion king
Wolf3D
Biohazard
Prince of Persia- The Shadow and the Flame
Dave

and a few others that i cant remember now.

I'd also like to mention Roadrash. Inspite of not being a DOS game, it has to be one of the most enjoyable and memorable games i've ever played.

Warcraft II. Got my parents to go out and buy more ram because it kept crashing when I only had the bare minimum to play (8mb). I think the 4 more they bought cost like 125$. Also, dat orchestrated soundtrack

I miss that time... NOT!
Having 4MB RAM and having to juggle config file settings so you could free enough memory in the first 640K, some thought it was part of the fun, to me it definitely wasn't.

But speaking of the games themselves, I'd have to go with Wing Commander series and Strike Commander.

Betrayal at Krondor was the most funnest of them all to get working ^.^

I have the perfect soundfont that made all the old midi games sound amazing, unfortunately I no longer have a sound card to load soundfonts with (and I never managed to get those software solutions to work) 🙁

are you able to download those games off abondonware yet? or can you get them working on a windows 7 pc

Probably. I know the X-Wing Collector's Series works. That was the updated version released in 1998 that uses the same graphics engine as XvT. The original versions probably work via DOSBox.

Sadly LucasArts hasn't released them through official channels but just Google if you want to find them. May be some disc copies still floating around too.

Two that I haven't seen listed that I really liked were.

Strike Commander (Awesome graphics, but man what a boot disk I had to make to get it to work.)
Lands of Lore (I really liked Star Trek, so Picard on the front cover did it for me.)

Too many to list like others have said, but I loved X-Wing where my buddy would usually take care of the power between shields, engines, and weapons while I flew. Dune was great also.

One game I rarely hear anyone mention is Darklands. We had to go out and buy 4 MB (not GB) of memory to play it (and it cost $400). Best RPG of the time imo; isometric battles like Baldur's Gate with a really slick artwork presentation, set in Germany with all the myths being real like lizard men. Funny how much Skyrim and other games today are direct rip-offs of Darklands mechanics too - first game I ever remember where your skills like polearms went up with use.

The soundtrack was actually recorded straight from the Roland Sound Canvas general midi sound module (which sounded amazing for those lucky enough to have one. The next generation after the MT-32 before it.)

I had the SC-88 Super Sound Canvas. I turned off the digital soundtrack and listened to mine through the module instead. I loved surprising people with how it was so much better than the "darned good" they were used to. 😉

Now that's one worth tracking down!! Awesome to the extreme!

I've been having a terrible time getting X-Wing Alliance (the most modern in that series?) but modern machines just hate the graphics engine. 🙁

Time to fire up my classic gamer machine with Voodoo3, but bring it down to 98SE instead of Windows XP.

Another game definitely worth anyone's time is the classic DOS Master of Orion which I still find every bit as good as its awesome successor, MOO2.

Hmm, Kotor works just fine for me without any fuss. Though I was having trouble getting it to run in 1080p last time I messed around with it.

I seem to recall having XWA running on Windows 7. I'll have to try booting it up when I get home, assuming I can find the discs.

as if dos was old folks stuff.

C64 was the bomb. still unbeaten. Ghostbusters, Paradroid, Elite, Zork, Wasteland, the whole AD&D "gold box" series, etc ..

I'm there with you too - Paradroid was awesome. Elite was also great, but most frustrating docking ever. 🙂
