The current use of the term "meme" was coined by Richard Dawkins in 1976 in the book The Selfish Gene. It refers to cultural knowledge that is passed from person to person. Like a cultural gene.

Internet memes have been around for a long time too, but I think a lot of the recent ones started with Something Awful. SA members also founded 4chan. Of course, before the internet was as popular as it is now, memes still circulated around IRC and stuff. I don't know; I wasn't really online back in the mid-90s (just had AOL).

I'm not sure I'm glad these are dead, but I'm surprised no one has mentioned them since they were once near and dear to OT:

1) stab, st@b, etc. Became so commonplace that "stab" was once filtered as profanity on the forums.
2) That "end yourself" pic--some guy handing you a gun, first posted by a certain mercenary.
3) die in a fire, DIAF. (Also the short-lived spinoff from someone's pool adventures: TPAD)

I liked when Something Awful was pushing that stupid famicon simpsons thing. The original thing was horrible (...) but it actually started to get funny when enough stupid shit was made.
