Member Contact Discussion.....

Page 2 - Seeking answers? Join the AnandTech community: where nearly half-a-million members share solutions and discuss the latest tech.
I don't think that contacting the "bottom 400" is spaming, so to speak.
If they have already done dnet at one time or other, they obviously had an interest in it before.

Yeah, you might get some a** that's moved to a different team or something and gets POd at ya.

IMHO it's a good idea.

KW -
Again - we're talking about the Team Anandtech "bottom 400" - in terms of production, not social status of course :Q

We need a mechanism to pass information and get people motivated. The dc forum is the place to do that, but we gotta get 'em here first!

[I hate typos]

We aren't looking for Inactives Just Team Anandtech members in the lower 400 that are still active crackers. This should logically offend no one.

Couple questions for this excelent idea.

How are you planning to contact these people? Alot of people do not list their email in their dnet profile, and if they do it may be different than the ones they used in the forums, how would you know who they are?

If you are planning on sending this only to people not active in this forum (which is how I understood it) what measuers will you take to filter out current and future participants?

I agree with DanC. I don't see why someone who's actively cracking for TA would be offended by one short, friendly email inviting them to drop by the forum and shoot the bull with the guys and giving them a link to the forum. If they're still cracking obviously they're interested and who doesn't like to talk to people who share a common interest?

If this works out for you RC5 guys we seti people will have to try the same thing.🙂

BTW: The reason I joined Team AnandTech's seti team was that they had the most active DC forum I had been to. I wanted a place to go where there was plenty of active and knowlegable people who shared my interest. I really believe the strength of this team can't be measured by the stats. It has to be a measure of people. We have a great group of guys in this forum. We need to rely on this strength and find a way to get the other members to drop in every now and then and see just how great this team really is.😀

Blade could nt have said it better.

About who gets the emails, DanC is sending me a list, I am going to post this on my server as an Access database, anyone will be able to go to a page, enter thier email address(es) and those will be put in a "do not send" table. The database will also insure each address only recieves an email once. At the bottom of the email will be a link to automatically remove that person from the list, if they choose to do so, and they will never recieve an email again. These are just a few ways to prevent spamming people.

OK Guys - how about we go one step further?

When someone joins up with TA, maybe we could have it direct them to a "I want the team newsletter" or something page - or maybe just put an "add me to the newsletter" box on the Teams page. - this will of course feed the database.

Same, same from the AT distributed forums perhaps? Bwah?

im behind it, i can make the database and logic rules, those guys (there are several of them) that have pages already can have the html forms to inteact with it, ill make some guidleines and send it to anyone who has a page and wants to help.

Sorry Blade - I wasn't intentionally leaving the rest of you folks out. My theory is that all projects will see recruitment from new distributed forum members as it heats up. 🙂

Ok, I haven't had a lot of time to think through all of this (been busy working on a few things here at work 😉), but here's my quick take:

1. If we restrict the email to the current ACTIVE members of TA, I don't see how that could be considered SPAM. If it was to inactive or non-team members, then it would be SPAM.
2. We don't need a long letter, just a few short sentences, STARTING with a hearty thank-you for participating in Team Anandtech's distributed processing efforts.
3. It should include a sentence about Team Anandtech's current and expected rankings.
4. It should also include an invite to check out the team website link, the Distributed Forums link, the Gamebox link, IRC channel, etc.
5. It should end with a way (maybe 2 links, one to join the TA newsletter, and one to not join and not receive any further mailings) for them to join the TA newsletter.
6. If we do not hear from them one way or another on the newsletter, we should assume they don't want to be contacted or added to the newsletter.

I agree, getting more existing members active on the forum and IRC and the gamebox and races, etc. can help improve Team Anandtech's keyrate!

😀

DanC, I wasn't trying to imply anything.🙂 I was just thinking us seti guys will need to step up and try and get something going along the same lines. Whether it's a combined Team AnandTech thing or just each individual project doing it. Either way the seti team really needs to try the same thing.😀

I also agree that the more traffic through the forums the more members all the teams will get.🙂

Blade - I agree with what you're saying. I don't know if it's possible, or desirable to use the same logic/rules/server/separate database, or what - seems all distributed computing projects are Team Anandtech no?

Perhaps there's room for everyone - but... that's not MY call, Train would need to address that - he's taken off like a bat outa hades. 🙂

I would support the creation of a voluntary email list that those interested in joining could do so. However, my question is where is the source of the list you propose to create now?

DanC- When you say the "where" is not important, I totally disagree. Obviously, we don't have a list that we created yet. If we go forward and develop a method for people to subscribe when they join, that would be a great tool. If we are talking about gleaning a list of emails corresponding to active members in RC5 but not in this forum from DNET's team stats pages, that is no different than what was proposed before.

SPAM is unsolicited email. If you send me email to an address that I didn't share with the intent of receiving such mail, it is SPAM.

Train-

<< The question of right or wrong has already been solved, some people agree, some dont, well, like it or not the people who want to do something about this are going to do something. >>

I admire the passion, insight, and drive you and others show for the team while brainstorming for ways to improve our position. However, I read that statement and hope that you will consider the opinions of the team as a group before taking any actions. You've started on the right foot by bringing the topic up for discussion, next I hope you plan to put any proposed actions to a vote. I hope we can improve the team as a team.

Osmo.

DanC, we'll see how all of this works out for you RC5 guys. If you all can get everything going smoothly maybe someone in the seti group can setup something similar to what you guys are trying. I think if we can get some of our seti members who don't frequent the forums to drop in here once in awhile it would help us out alot.🙂

Whether it's totally independant of what you guys are doing or part of it, either way I think it would be a good idea for the seti guys to check into it also.🙂

BTW I hope this project Train has jumped on is a shot in the arm for the RC5 group. I'd love to see you guys slap the DPC silly.😕

Osmo -
I appreciate the spirit in which you say what you've said. (that sounds like Gore) - oh well...
anyway -

We are so collectively terrified that someone is going to say SPAM! - that we do nothing. Nothing that is, but watch our friends from the Netherlands gain daily, steadily - because they communicate, manage, and share information with their membership.

I for one, frankly don't give a rip what any whiner wants to call it. They just click "unsubscribe" and it's done. BUT - you are losing sight, as most have - what the intent is. For the 4th time in this thread.... "Increase participation in the distributed computing forum at AnandTech." Not contacting inactive members - not soliciting rc5 participation... FRIENDLY, SHORT, SWEET - and to the point. I reject the notion that it fits any definition of SPAM. Who the hell cares anyway? - we throw away junk mail every day. These aren't unsolicited. If you're doing rc5 for Team Anandtech - then you should have a right to choose to get information. period.

Train and I are not going to sit idly by, shaking in our boots that someone will say SPAM that we're not going to do something. Every idea for increasing membership is shot down, every d*mned time. I'm coming to the end of my interest in generating team spirit. If we have none, If we can generate none, if we're too afraid - then we deserve 2nd place.

This is not solely directed toward you. It's a composite of my reactions to others. Get behind something... or get out of the way. We're going to win this or die trying. period.

Great points OSMO!

Again, I think that the success of this effort hinges greatly on the ability to point all members to one unified location for info, stats, updates, etc. What needs to be done to get ta.com up and running? Seems to me the last I heard it was a problem with getting the copy of W2k server for the box?

I also think that this should include all projects. We need to leverage the power of all of our projects to make this happen.

-Mike

<< get ta.com >>

Mike - you're not reading the posts are you? - TA.com is already owned.
This isn't about TA.com

The points you raise are valid - with the exception of your endorsement of Osmo's points - that I (and others) disagree with. Enumerated above.

Let's stop waiting for something to happen, and make it happen.
Because what we're waiting for is to see DPC in first place - guaranteed.

<< This is exactly what I've been talking about. That is negativity - and will ultimately be our undoing. The whole point to this discussion has been that we are missing some 600 potential [distributed computing forum] members that are already cracking for TA. >>

Maybe I missed something, but who are these 600 people? People who are interested but don't know how to join? I probably missed an integral part of this discussion.

BTW, I didn't mean the sheep thing in a bad way, I just meant people who will do whatever you say without knowing what it is simply because someone tells you it's good. Many of the people who are dedicated to RC5 are dedicated because they found out about it and it interested them, not because some people told them that they 'should do it' because it's good for Anandtech.

DanC-

I know your frustration is not aimed at myself solely. I agree that a communication system would be a great tool. But addresses at DNET should not be collected for this purpose. Sure it would be great to have them, give those participants info about the forum, but hind sight is 20/20.

Whether we are splitting hairs over the definition of SPAM is not nearly as disappointing as you saying "who cares?":|

I will agree that it is a way to accomplish the goal we seek, but it is not necessarily the way that is in the best interest of the team, nor supported by the team.

Again, having passion for your favorite team project is great in my opinion, but stating that you really don't give a shxt about the consensus of the team and plan to move forward with whatever ideas you have now or in the future directly countradict your intent to grow, unify, and strengthen the team!

I want to reassure you that I have not lost sight of your intent, but merely disagree with your method.

Osmo.

You and I have clashed in the past. We've set it aside, so I won't respond in an inflammatory manner... 🙂

Have you some better suggestion perhaps?
