It looks like something I'll be waiting for HBO or Showtime to carry it. But I do want to see it, just not spend $9 on. :p

Wikipedia says that the movie is making political commentary, comparing the Iraq war to the Mayans sending people for sacrifice.

My thoughts on the Mayans, partly relevant anyway, is that some ancient civilizations vanished because they grew too fast, and used up the local resources. It seems to me that we may be facing something similar. We've grown very quickly, but it's not clear that it's sustainable growth. The predicted energy crisis, namely oil, is one facet of this. Everyone in the US wants a car. The Chinese want cars. Indians want cars. They're all going to need some kind of fuel. There isn't enough oil production capacity in the world to allow them all to run those cars.

Do we face an sensationalist apocalypse? No, I don't think so. Raised tensions in the near future over increasingly scarce resources? Yes. And I tell you too, as shortages arise, those in charge will say, "It's not our fault. No one could have forseen this."

i'm indifferent about mel gibson as the person, but i think he's awesome as an actor and director. i will watch this movie and will probably enjoy it, just like everything else he's done (even 'what women want').

Exactly.

I think Mel Gibson may be sorta nutty as a person, but as a director and actor he is indeed phenomenal. It's the same way I feel about Bono and U2: I really dislike Bono, but man do I love U2.

I never saw "Passion" even though I wouldn't mind watching it. I am far more interested in seeing "Apocolypto" though.

Hopefully it'll be better than The Passion of The Christ. I was amazed how bad that movie turned out to be. I would have imagined that an experienced director, with a big pile of cash, shooting a story that has fascinated a fair portion of the western population for two millenia could produce a watchable movie. I was wrong.

what the hell did you find so bad about it? did you buy into all the anti-jesus-flogging propaganda?

i thought it was extremely well-made. it makes you really feel loved, if only for a moment, that someone would go through such torture just for you... whether you're christian or not. it makes you wish there was someone who would go to those lengths for you today.

I plan on seeing it. It looks very interesting.

I don't really care about his opinions on Jews if he's got an interesting movie. I personally think his anti-Semitic views are despicable but as long as he isn't putting those views into his movies, I'll watch them.

I didn't care much for The Passion of Christ (it was alright but not as amazing as everyone claimed) but I did enjoy Braveheart.

I don't know what to think about Mel's latest. He's taken a huge dive in my book since his DUI ordeal. I think everyone here agrees that Braveheart is in the Top 10 of Best Man Movies. And I have seen "Passion". It's a beautiful film, and I applaud him for having the balls to make it. But I won't be in any rush to see this new movie.

Man, I'm a fan of age of empires: conquerors it'd be fun seeing Mayans. Go fast imperial, eagle warriors with 100 hp /8 arrow defence and plumed archers, oh man *drools* pwnage. This movie looks fun too, I don't care if Mel Gibson is fvckin nuts :)
