.12 is a few glasses of wine. Barely enough to get a slight buzz.

It's so low, that it USED to be the legal limit until the irrational MADD hysteria.

i don't know about BAC stuff, but just because something *used* to be the law doesn't really say much. alcohol used to be illegal, fwiw.

That is six glasses in one hour @ 180 lbs. That is certainly more than safe.

Or just 2-3 drinks made too strong by a "friendly" bartender.

At any rate, online BAC calculators are far from precise, and .12 was the legal limit for years.

Apparently he was impaired enough for the cops to notice (speeding) and pull him over.

I can't find anything online that states the legal limit was .12 at all, let alone for years. I found .15 way back in the day...and everything else says .10 up until MADD lobbied to get it down to .08. Studies have shown (according to some of the stuff I saw online) that at .04 your chance of a crash doubles, and at .08 it is four times as high as 0.

*shrug* i'm not old enough to remember, so I'll take your guys' word for it on the .12 though. 🙂

It was legal prior to that. 😛

Kinda funny and yet what is the deal with all these celebs getting DUI's ?

Maybe they feel they are above the law.

QFT I've always wondered why our politicians listened to the biased, anger-driven agenda of MADD instead of people who actually know what it's like to drink socially and make a decision to drive.

i dunno about you, but i weigh 180 and after 6 glasses of wine in an hour, there's no way i can safely drive. that's a bottle and a half of wine.

Speeding != impaired...that said, I wouldn't drive at .12 BAC, and neither should Mel Gibson.

Our DUI laws are sad. Countless lawyers have told me that it's more beneficial to try to run away from the cops if you're running the risk of getting a DUI.

What's the big deal? 0.12% is not really even drunk unless you use some bogus standard to determine it as such.

They should be disbarred (or at least sanctioned) if they really said that. Fleeing the police is a felony in many jurisdictions (and a crime everywhere in the US), and attorneys can't ethically advocate committing crimes. Refusing a breathalyzer is frequently a good idea, but flight is dangerous and highly illegal.
