At the heart of the phone we see Samsung's Exynos 7420 SoC. Meizu is one of the rare vendors besides Samsung Electronics to actually employ S.LSI's silicon so this puts the Chinese manufacturer in an interesting position this year as this allows them to have a competitive advantage over other manufacturers who chose other SoC suppliers. As we've seen earlier in the year, we deemed the Exynos 7420 as one of the highlights of this year so the PRO 5 is well served by the big.LITTLE chipset consisting of 4x Cortex A57 at 2.1GHz and 4x Cortex A53's at 1.5GHz. Graphics is provided by a Mali T760MP8 at 770MHz - also a top performer among SoCs this year.

Other highlights include:

  • 4GB RAM
  • USB Type-C
  • 5.7" 1080p AMOLED screen
  • USF 2.0 and micro-SD support
  • 21MP Sony IMX230 with F/2.0 (same sensor used for Moto X Style/Pure)
  • Fingerprint sensor
  • $440~480
Interestingly it scores higher than Galaxy phones in Geekbench. (Possible benchmark boosting or using higher-binned Exynos 7420?)

This phone will not land on the state side, but may still be an indication of things to come.

None of the meizu/xiaomi phone's will come here let alone leave china, so why even talk about them?

And probably still no app drawer. Seriously, Chinese manufacturers need to stop removing that thing.

UFS 2.0 and micro-SD support

So what excuse do Samsung has for the lack of SD on their flagships again? When that along with USB type-C is accomplished by a China OEM with far less engineering and financial resources?

Bet you could order it from Banggood, Gearbest, TMart or Everbuying within a few days of release.

I think it might. Nowadays you can find phones with LTE for sub-$200. This phone is a flagship phone by any stretch.

It puzzles me why the Chinese ROMs do not even give options to customize home screen and app drawer. I get that they want to look like iOS, but surely they can have a toggle hidden somewhere in the developer options?

You can't install 3rd party launchers on them?

I am sure I can but it is one of those things that bugs me because it seems so trivial.

Yeah, it's BS that they disable basic functions of Android. It's just stupid.

They aren't disabling basic functions of Android, their launcher just doesn't have it. It's just a launcher, easily changeable with another.

It's like complaining about Samsung phones always having that Apps button on the right side of the dock, or Google's launcher not letting you hide apps in the app drawer. These aren't OS level changes, just how different launchers are configured.
