Meineke quoted $1,444 to fix breaks

To start off, I know nothing about cars. He told me my hubs exploded, leaking fluid, needed new shoes, new rotors, bla bla and whatever else.

Gave me the list of parts with prices. Later I looked them up on the net. Some parts that he was going to charge $350 for are only $16. The whole list was blown up like that.

Had a friend take a look at the car, all it needed was new rear shoes. $35. Hubs weren't 'exploded', wasn't leaking fluid and all that other crap the meineke guy told me.

Isn't this illegal somehow? It's ridiculous anyways. Happy I got them fixed. \\

Did you get a written quote from Meineke, or just a verbal quote? If you got a written one, you can get a comparison quote, then call up their corporate office and complain. Obviously someone there was trying to take you to a ride and was going to pocket some cash, they might like to know about that.

That's the thing about Meinke though, they are all individually owned so the corporate office can't really do much.

We learned that after we took my wife's van there to get the brakes changed and then had to take it back 4 more times for them to get the brakes to stop squeaking. We wanted to take the car to another Meinke to get them to fix it but couldn't.

Yeah, I have it all printed out setting next to me now. I'm contemplating on going there and showing him my receipt from the auto parts store. Then threating to contact the better buisness bureu(sp?)

You could talk to the manager but he probaby wouldn't do anything.

Not that it makes it ok, but is English not your primary language? If it's not they probably thought they could take advantage of you.

Doesn't matter if they're independently owned or corporate, they are using the Meineke name. If someone locally owns the business, then they signed a franchise agreement with the company of Meineke to use the name and image, and trying to screw people over ruins that image, and they can and WILL do something about it if you call them.

Yep, worst case scenario, if there's too many complaints they can either not renew the franchise agreement, or if it's very serious immediately cut off the agreement (based on a contract violation).

Local mechanic FTW. Usually they just charge us the money for parts (real prices), and barely anything for labor. Jiffy Lube used to rip us off, my dad's so glad he found this place. They always change the oil or fix the brakes and other sh1t for free. My dad usually tips them for that, they don't charge anything.

So how do they stay in business if they work for free...?!?
