LOS ANGELES — Former BART police officer Johannes Mehserle was found guilty of guilty of involuntary manslaughter Thursday for killing Oscar Grant III early Jan. 1, 2009.
The verdict, which came after 6½ hours of deliberation, ends the initial chapter of an unprecedented criminal case that marked the first time in at least 15 years that a California police officer was charged with murder for an on-duty shooting.

The case began more than a year ago when Mehserle pulled out his gun and shot Grant in the back as the 22-year-old laid prone on the Fruitvale BART station platform.

That would require some intent and no intelligent objective person could watch the videos, read the testimony of multiple civilian witnesses with no ties or loyalties to either side of the case, and come to the conclusion that it was anything other than a tragic unintended accident.

Place under stressful situation = mistakes happen. Its really not terribly difficult to understand, unless someone has some bias that prevents them from being objective.

From everything I saw, involuntary manslaughter is the appropriate charge in this case.

NOTHING indicated that the cop intended to shoot the criminal who was resisting arrest...but instead, he meant to taser the guy into submission.

Is it a bad thing that it happened? Yes, for all concerned, but it did not rise to the level of murder in the second degree.

I'm waiting for the rioting and burning to begin. I'm glad I'm 80 or so miles away from Oaktown...I remember the rioting in L.A. after the Rodney King incident.

No matter how you turn it, he killed the guy. It was a mistake, but he still killed someone, even if it was by accident. Involuntary manslaughter appears to be the right charge.

Its only the right charge if Mersehle acted in a way that was so negligent that it was criminal. It appears to have been a compromise between convicting someone they didn't believe committed an intentional crime and appeasing a certain demographic to protect the city from further riots by tossing them a token/bone.

Deaths can result from accidents that are not criminal. I would have acquitted him, personally, but then I don't live in a region where I have to be fearful of what that certain urban demographic might do when they don't get their way.

This is laughable. Do you really think the police department can handle any of those communities in a full scale riot? It would be a blood bath. They would rip through those cops like a hot knife through butter. Half those communities laced with gangs are armed up to the gills. See they go running up in there it ain't just blacks, they going to be dealing with an entire minority community. They would need the military. This ain't 1950......you are seriously clueless

If I remember correctly after the Rodney King verdict riot the rioters couldn't even handle a couple of armed Korean businessman with guns. The thing about riots is that they are disorganized. The disorganiziation would work against them when they meet with organized police/National Guard troops. Now if someone could organize the rioters before the riot starts and then have a riot start you would basically have the start of a insurgency movement. This would give the police trouble. Things like goading the police into deploying and then detonating a IED when the assume a positions to dispel the rioters. Sniping at them as they try to stop unarmed rioters etc.. Basically all the standard insurgency stuff. I just don't see that level of organization. Even if they are emotional and hyped up it will not help. I hope that no riots happens from this.

In all seriousness. In a situation like this, this would be a community uprising, not a group of people. Big difference. When a good portion of the police department and the national guard being from that community and minority, I wouldn't be shocked if they turned on their commrades. I have seen one riot, in Vineland NJ several years ago. A black guy got shot, they called in police from several neighboring towns, they sat in their cars and the thousands of people looted and rioted and the police did nothing.

Several things. One it was way more than two hundred people, trust me it was ridiculous. It was that many just in one part of Landis avenue. The ave is like 20 blocks long and it was covered with people. All down on the side streets and what not. He was a popular guy. It was crazy. I seen two police officers running with guns drawn threatening to shoot to get away, they left the police car behind. Trust those people took that car apart. Numbers rule, no matter how organized a response may be.
