OK so I was playing Fallout 3. After like 1 hour of playing my computer screen went black but I could still hear the ingame audio. I restarted my computer and got back to the game. After like 30 minutes of intense gameplay, a few rapid sparks came out of the case. I think the sparks appeared to be around the gpu conenction/ hdd connection area. Computer just went dead and smelled up the room. I tried smelling the computer to see which part might've burned up, but I could not locate exact spot. I think it is my cheap PSU. Also just for the record, I used an adapter for 2 molex connectors into gpu power, because my PSU did not have seperate PCI-E power connector. Comp won't turn on. What do you think?


Meh: why couldn't it last until christmas when I get a new pc?

First of all your title needs to be Censored.

How about a full list of your system components.

If you have to use an adapter like that then chances are the PSU is not suitable for your system. Since you mentioned the sparks came from the GPU/HDD area there is a good chance that the PSU took the video card out with it. So not only will you be replacing the PSU but the video card as well. These things happen when your using a cheap PSU or trying to push the limits of a PSU. Sorry to hear about your loss.
 
Brand of PSU would help. Thats what will really help determine the chances of the video card's survival. Some brands/models have a history of collateral damage when they fry. Overall you really won't know what survived and what didn't till you get another PSU in there. Cause there is the possibility of the RAM and CPU having also been damaged.

IMHO your about due for a new system anyway. This might just be the excusse you need to build/buy a new system.
 
DYNAPOWER USA EP-50X.C563-BX 500W ATX12V Power Supply. I know I need a new system, but I wish it could've lasted little bit longer. Anyway I am just gonna order a new good PSU. I will be able to use it on my upcoming new built.
 
OK. I guess this is the part where I ask for your input on what kind of PSU I should get. I don't have much to spend but something like 60 dollars shipped is alright. Also, I can use ebay with 25% off.

 
Well if you want to get a PSU to use in your next build you'll need to know about how much power that new build will need. Also you don't want to go cheap on the PSU. A PSU from ebay is probably a bad idea. You want to go new and you want to have a good quality name brand.

Have a look at these brands/models

Antec Eathwatts
Corsair (all models)

Those will be your best bange for your buck options.

 
Look in hot deals forum for the following brands: corsair, bfg, antec, maybe ocz. Bfg has a 550W for about $35 right now from buy.com. Will that do a 4870, jonny?

No more ButtPower (tm) psus for u.

When I first started reading your post, I thought mobo. Then the sparks. Now I fear that the crap PSU killed something else.

Needless to say, the PSU needs to be replaced FIRST.

The LS-550 is back up to $66.49. Still not a bad price, but not $35ish. 🙁
