Just curious if anyone here has played this collection. I still have two original copies of the SNES Mega Man X but I've never played any of the other X games. My girlfriend just sent me a picture of the PS2 version of X Collections and was wondering if they are any good.

So, has anyone played them? Do they follow the original Mega Man X or did they go off the rails in another direction?

All of the Mega Man x games are rated pretty poorly so I never even looked at them.

Mega Man X (the first one) is one of the highest rated in the series. The rest not so much, especially after x2 where it went more melee with Zero.

The first X is my favorite Mega Man game ever made. X2 and X3 were good, too. But X4 really hit it out of the park. After that the series went into decline.

I gotta play these. I don't think I ever played the SNES nor Playstation games, but god I loved Mega Man 2 and Mega Man 3 on NES.

Yea, Mega Man X is still regarded as the best Mega Man of all time by most players and speed-runners. This is why I always wondered about the other games in the X series. I never had a chance to play them when I was younger, but now I'm going back and trying to find all those games I missed out on. I just recently blew through the Jak and Daxter trilogy on the PS3 which I'm glad I pushed myself to complete Jak 2 because Jak 3 was really fun. The other two... I could have done without them.

You'll love Mega Man X. It takes place in a future where robots have developed consciousness and decision making, with X being the first prototype in the line. He's named X by Dr. Light because of the unknowable potential that he represents for the future.

The beginning of the game takes you down a notch by pitting you against Vile in a fight you can't win. (not even with Game Genie!) X starts off as weak with limited combat potential and barely begins to match the destructive arsenal of Zero or Vile. But over the course of the game you get armor upgrades and become more powerful, to the point where you surpass them both. It makes for a thrilling rematch after you've cleared all eight robot masters.

It has one of my favorite soundtracks on the Super Nintendo too. Give it a listen.

X2 is my fave. Just something about seeing the group of mavericks plot against you and prepare before you start hunting them down really elevated it for me, especially because they they play up your own formidability before taking measures.

I originally got X4 for PC since I didn’t have a PSX/Saturn back in the day. It’s also really good, but the series went downhill from there. Play through first as Zero and then as X. It’s like two different games with Zero being significantly easier. Do NOT just beat it with Zero and act like you’ve played the game. It’s a lot like playing through Sonic & Knuckles with just Knuckles.

Along with others here, I definitely recommend playing Mega Man X if you liked the earlier NES games. There are some differences, and I think the two that will stand out the most at first are the inclusion of Heart Tanks. In Mega Man, you have your life meter and it never really changes. You can refill it with E tanks (in MM2+), but that's really all you do. In Mega Man X, you start with a lower amount of health (it's very easy to see when compared to the special ability bar), and each Heart Tank will increase your maximum health. These Heart Tanks are usually hidden and may require a suit power-up (one requires an incredibly long jump using the boots upgrade) or a boss ability to get (e.g. you use Boomerang Kawanger's boomerang to grab one of them).

Speaking of suit power-up, that's another big difference in X. You start off as the titular Blue Bomber, but a you find suit upgrades, you'll don a white armor. If I remember correctly, there's an upgrade for chest, legs, arms, and helm. There's even a fun, hidden secret upgrade that requires... I think all suit and Heart Tank upgrades. The first suit upgrade that you'll likely find are the legs, because it's quite literally in the way (in Ice Penguin's stage), so you can't miss it. Some of the others are a little bit harder to find!

I always preferred the normal Megaman games more than the X games. Something about them was just off. I remember playing X1-X3 but not much about them.

I never really got into the Mega Man series, but I did lightly play the X games on the SNES (for some reason those give me a huge sense of nostalgia) and I had Mega Man III on the NES that I played a lot as a kid but never beat. I want to say I'd prefer the X games, simply because they just seem better (better graphics/sound), but the originals were harder and I have a soft spot for the NES.

I'd say play through them. Not like you have anything to lose except time.
